GAME 2: Sonoma State 7, Notre Dame de Namur 0 -- Box Score
BELMONT, Calif. -- Amanda Llerena and
Katy Bihl tossed a combined no-hitter in the opener and Bihl came back to earn her first career victory in the nightcap as the Sonoma State softball team shut out host Notre Dame de Namur in Wednesday's non-conference doubleheader, 5-0 and 7-0, in Belmont. The Seawolves remain perfect on the year at 4-0 while the Argonauts fall to 4-5.
Bihl worked the final two innings of game one to earn her second save of the season, then started game two and went five innings, giving up four hits to notch the win in the circle. In all, the left-hander from Newark went seven innings and scattered four hits, walked one, struckout four of the 28 batters she faced on Wednesday. Llerena (2-0) got the victory in the opener after going the first five frames, walking four and striking out eight.
Offensively,
Ashley Long had three hits with a double and five runs batted in followed by
Hayley Condon's 4 for 7 effort at the plate with three doubles and four RBI.
Sonoma State returns home on Friday to open CCAA play against Cal State Monterey Bay (4-1). First pitch from the Seawolf Softball Field is scheduled for 12:00 pm.
GAME 1
While Llerena and Bihl shut down the Notre Dame de Namur lineup in game one, it wasn't until the fourth inning that Sonoma State put a run across the plate -- a sacrifice fly by
Megan Konieczka to score Condon. In the fifth, Condon walked and Long was hit by the pitch, both with the bases loaded to give SSU the 3-0 lead. A pair of insurance runs came across the plate in the seventh when
Olivia Lucchese and Condon each knocked in a run to account for the 5-0 win.
The Seawolves racked up 11 hits, but left 12 runners on base, including two or more in four of the seven offensive innings. Condon went 3 for 4 with two doubles, two RBI and a run scored while
Keisi Chinen went 2 for 3 with two runs scored.
Notre Dame de Namur couldn't record a hit in the ballgame, but it would find runners on base in the first, fourth and seventh innings, leaving two on in the fourth and two more in the seventh.
It was the first time since Apr. 6, 2012 that Sonoma State had held an opponent hitless in a game.
GAME 2
Sonoma dominated the second game as well, plating four runs in the second inning and three more in the sixth. Notre Dame de Namur was finally able to pound out a base hit -- five in the game -- on a one-out single by Amanda Wallach in the bottom of the first inning. The Argonauts tallied five hits in all, four of which came off of Bihl, the other off of
Melissa Smith, who worked the sixth inning before the game was called due to darkness.
In the SSU second, the Seawolves loaded the bases and
Alison Strycula walked to bring in the first run of the nightcap before Condon delivered a two-RBI double for the 3-0 lead. Long followed with a sacrifice fly to bring in Strycula and Sonoma led 4-0. Long wasn't done, however, as the freshman has continued a hot start to her collegiate career, bringing in three runs on a bases-clearing double in the sixth for the knockout blow to the Argos.
Long was 2 for 3 in the second game with the aforementioned four RBI. Strycula was a perfect 2 for 2 at the plate with an RBI and two runs scored.
Notre Dame de Namur's Kayla Anderson recorded two of the five hits for the hosts, she also drew a walk.
