George Asmus pitched six scoreless innings for Sonoma on Friday afternoon.
BOX SCORE Sonoma State 3, Cal State L.A. 0  --  Box Score

LOS ANGELES, Calif.
-- Brennan Fulkerson delivered a key pinch hit, two-run single in the seventh inning to give Sonoma State all the runs they'd need on Friday as they took the opener of a four-game series from Cal State L.A., 3-0, at Reeder Field in Los Angeles.  Fulkerson's hit turned out to be a game-winner because of a stellar outing from a trio of Sonoma pitchers - George Asmus, Stevan Zaharias, and Ricky Clark - who scattered six hits over nine shutout innings.  The win lifts the Seawolves to 2-1 overall and 1-0 in conference play.  Cal State L.A. drops to 2-5, 0-1 CCAA.

Asmus and Cal State L.A. starter Brandon Quintero locked into a pitcher's duel from the outstart.  Neither team could muster the offense to push a run across the plate until the top of the seventh when a Devin Alexander single and Wesley Wallace double put a couple of runners on for Sonoma.  Coach Goelz called Fulkerson's number and the Long Beach State transfer laced a single to right center to score a pair.

The Golden Eagles threatened just a half inning later when they loaded the bases with a two-out rally against Zaharias.  Fortunately, the Sonoma sophomore was able to induce a fielder's choice to escape the jam and preserve the lead.

The Seawolves tacked on an insurance run in the ninth inning when Wallace's third double of the game led to a sacrifice fly from Shawn Walters

Asmus got the win after throwing six shutout innings.  The senior walked one and struck out four.  Freshman Ricky Clark got the save in his first collegiate appearance.

Wallace finished the game 3-for-4 with the aforementioned three doubles and two runs scored.  Garrett Schwartz reached base three times for Sonoma, as well.

Manny Acosta had three hits for the Golden Eagles.  Quintero was tagged with the loss after striking out six and walking two.

The series continues tomorrow with a doubleheader.
