ROHNERT PARK -- A three-pointer by
Tanner Adams with 2:57 left in the contest got the Sonoma State women's basketball team to within four points of the 14th-ranked team in the country, Cal Poly Pomona, but the Broncos (18-3, 15-2 CCAA) flexed their CCAA-leading muscles and went on a 7-0 run over the next two minutes to secure a 74-64 win over the Seawolves (3-18, 2-15 CCAA) on Friday night at The Wolves' Den.
Sonoma State kept Cal Poly Pomona on its toes all night, forcing 14 ties and 19 lead changes and SSU led for 10 of the game's 40 minutes with the last lead coming at the 13:39 mark of the second half, a two-point advantage (49-47) after a couple of made free throws by
Kristina Fahey. However, the Broncos scored four straight points and the Seawolves could not regain the lead the rest of the way.
Cal Poly Pomona was unstoppable from the floor on Friday, connecting on 27 of 59 shots in the contest, a 45.8 percent clip. The Broncos also outrebounded the Seawolves, 53-34, including 38-22 on the defensive glass.
The Broncos' Ariel Marsh dropped in a game-high 21 points while both Jada Blackwell and Ashley Lovett recorded double-doubles with 20 points, 10 rebounds and 19 points, 15 rebounds, respectively.
For Sonoma State, Adams led the way with 16 points on 5 of 10 from the hardwood, including 4 of 7 from three-point range.
Molly Kommer added 13 points and
Bronte Sheahan chipped in with 11. The Seawolves were 23 of 69 from the floor (33.3 percent), and just 6 of 28 from long range.
Sonoma State returns to the floor Saturday night when it hosts Humboldt State at 5:30 pm in The Wolves' Den.
