GAME 2: Cal State L.A. 10, Sonoma State 4 -- Box Score
LOS ANGELES -- Junior
Eric Ehlow enjoyed a memorable Sonoma State debut, hitting two home runs and a double in the first game of Saturday's doubleheader, but his contributions were muffled by five errors that played a big part in the Seawolves dropping both ends of the twinbill. Cal State L.A. picked up a 4-3 win in game one on an error with two outs in the bottom of the ninth. A seven-run second inning opened the flood gates in game two, dealing Sonoma just their second doubleheader sweep since the 2012 season.
With the losses, Sonoma State falls to 2-3 overall and 1-2 in CCAA play. The Golden Eagles, last year's CCAA champions, improve to 4-5, 2-1 CCAA.
The series will conclude on Sunday with a single game slated for 11:00 am.
GAME 1
The Golden Eagles struck first in game one, scoring once in the third and two more times in the fourth to take a 3-0 lead. Sonoma would strike back with a run of their own when Ehlow homered to lead off the fifth.
Sonoma tied the game up in the seventh when Ehlow reached into his bag of tricks for more heroics, following a
Dallas Seidel single with a two-run blast to right center. It marked the first time a Seawolf had hit two home runs in the same game since February 24, 2012, when
Garrett Gooselaw pulled off the feat.
The Seawolves would get a runner to third base with two outs in the ninth, but Reed Reznicek was able to strike out
Brandon Baranzini looking to escape the threat.
Following a one-out walk and single, Sonoma's
Blake Sack popped up Niko Garcia, only to see the next batter, Casey Ryan push across the winning run on an error by
Jackson Stogner.
In addition to his two home runs, Ehlow's game one line included a double, two runs, and three RBIs. Sack was tagged with the loss after giving up the unearned run in the ninth.
Haydon Turpin started and went four innings before giving way to
Cody Lane, who threw 3 2/3 scoreless innings.
GAME 2
The nightcap started out promising for Sonoma State as they scored twice in the first and once in the third to lead 3-0.
Brennan Fulkerson had an RBI groundout and
Daniel Caresio singled in a run with a hit up the middle.
Things came undone for Sonoma starter
Aaron Gillis in the third, however, as a pair of walks and a hit by pitch eventually built up to a Kyle Peralta grand slam and a seven-run inning. Two more runs were tacked on in the fourth and though Caresio scored a run on a
Wesley Wallace double in the fifth, there was no comeback in store for the Seawolves.
Gillis picked up the loss after giving up six runs in an inning and two-thirds.
Taylor Toccalino and
Devin Alexander pitched in relief. Caresio had a nice game, singling three times and walking.
