GAME 2: Cal State Monterey Bay 7, Sonoma State 4 -- Box Score
ROHNERT PARK -- The Sonoma State softball team held a lead late in both ballgames on Saturday, but Cal State Monterey Bay staged a couple of late rallies on both ends of Saturday's doubleheader to sweep the Seawolves, 6-5 in nine innings and 7-4, to cap opening weekend of the CCAA schedule. Sonoma falls to 5-3 overall and begins the conference season at 1-3. The Otters rise to 7-2 (3-1 CCAA).
Hayley Condon had a huge day on offense for Sonoma State, going 4 for 8 with a triple, four runs batted in and two runs scored in the twinbill combined.
The Seawolves will play a midweek non-conference doubleheader at the Academy of Art on Wednesday in San Francisco before heading even further south to take on Cal State San Bernardino Friday and Saturday in San Bernardino.
GAME 1
Sonoma jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning on a sacrifice RBI bunt by
Keisi Chinen and a double steal with
Ashley Long scoring on the play. SSU tacked one more on in the third on a
Megan Konieczka home run to right center field to lead 3-0. Cal State Monterey Bay responded with a pair of runs in the top of the fourth to cut the SSU lead to 3-2, but a Condon RBI single in the next Seawolf at bat put the hosts up 4-2.
In the top of the sixth, the visiting Otters began to chip away at their deficit, scoring one run in the next four innings which eventually forced extra frames. A run in the top of the eighth gave CSUMB a 5-4 lead, but SSU responded with another Condon RBI with runners on the corners to knot the contest up at five apiece.
After the Otters scored another run in their half of the ninth, the Seawolves couldn't spark another rally and the three-hour, 19-minute marathon came to an end with a 6-5 score in favor of Cal State Monterey Bay.
Both Condon and Chinen had a pair of hits, accounting for four of nine Sonoma State hits against three different Cal State Monterey Bay pitchers. Seawolf starter
Amanda Llerena went the distance, allowing six runs (five earned) on 10 hits with four walks, four hit batsmen and five strikeouts.
CSUMB's Bianca Noriega got the win after working the final three innings; she allowed one run on three hits, adding a base hit at the plate. Anneliese Lopez was a perfect 3 for 3 with an RBI and three runs scored for the Otters in the opener.
GAME 2
True to form, Cal State Monterey Bay continued its trend of scoring one run in its innings, plating a run in the third, fourth and fifth to lead 3-0. However, in the bottom of the fifth, Sonoma State heated up thanks to a two-RBI triple by Condon and a two-RBI double by Konieczka to put the hosts up 4-3. The lead would be shortlived, however, as the Otters answered with four runs of their own to eventually take the 7-4 victory in game two, claiming the series win.
Condon again went 2 for 4 with two RBI, bringing them home on the aforementioned triple in the fifth.
Alison Strycula also added a pair of hits as the Seawolves again notched nine hits. Llerena came on in relief of starter
Melissa Smith in the fifth inning and was tagged with the loss, falling to 3-2 this season. Llerena allowed five runs, but just one earned on five hits after Smith tossed the first four frames; Smith gave up two runs on seven hits during her time in the circle.
Cori Reinhardt and Danica Arterburn had three hits apiece to lead Cal State Monterey Bay in the series finale, both with doubles. Noriega had two hits, homering in the third and doubling in the fifth. Lindsey Clarkson got the win for the Otters, scattering five hits, allowing three runs in four and a thirds innings of work.
