GAME 2:Â Sonoma State 11, Dominican 8 -- Box Score
ROHNERT PARK -- Megan Konieczka went 3 for 6 with three extra base hits, including a pair of triples and three runs batted in while
Hayley Condon,
Holli Brown and
Aubrie Tolliver each added three hits as well, helping the Sonoma State softball team to a perfect 2-0 start to the 2014 season with 6-0 and 11-8 victories over Dominican on Wednesday afternoon at the Seawolf Softball Field.
GAME 1
The Seawolves rattled off six runs on seven hits in the opener and got stellar pitching performances from starter
Amanda Llerena and reliever
Katy Bihl. Llerena, who enters the season as Sonoma's ace, tossed four innings, allowing two hits and one walk with four strikeouts, not allowing a run. Bihl then came on to work the final three innings, giving up just one hit and fanning a batter to earn the three-inning save, the first of her SSU career.
While the Sonoma State pitching duo kept Dominican's offense quiet, the Seawolves capitalized on a couple of defensive miscues by the Penguins to take an early lead. In the bottom of the second, SSU loaded the bases with one out before
Alison Strycula drew a walk to force in the first run of the ballgame. With the bases still jammed, Dominican starter Ashlyn Moriarity got out of the jam with a 1-2-5 double play to end the threat.
In their next offensive opportunity, three consecutive singles by Condon,
Ashley Long and Brown began the frame -- Brown's hit up the middle ricocheted off the leg of Moriarity, allowing Condon to score from third. Then, a double steal by Brown and Long put SSU up 3-0. Three more runs came across the plate in the fifth, thanks to back-to-back RBI triples by Brown and Konieczka and an RBI single by Tolliver accounting for the eventual 6-0 victory.
GAME 2
The nightcap featured plenty of offense by both squads as Sonoma State and Dominican combined for 19 runs and 24 hits in the two hour, 23 minute contest that saw sunshine and lukewarm temperatures at the start and light rain with cold, breezy conditions by the end. When the dust settled, it was the host Seawolves to hold on for the 11-8 win despite holding a 9-2 lead after four innings of play.
Dominican didn't waste any time scoring two runs on Sonoma State newcomer
Melissa Smith, plating runs on a sacrifice fly and an RBI single. However, the SSU offense came to the rescue, responding with six runs on five hits in its half of the first inning to turn a 2-0 deficit into a 6-2 lead. Smith ran into some trouble again in the second, but
Keisi Chinen picked off a runner on third base to end a bases-loaded threat by the Penguins and Smith cruised through her final two innings of work. In all, she gave up six hits and two runs, striking out three in her Sonoma State debut.
Meanwhile, the Seawolves tacked on three more runs in the fourth to take a seven-run lead, but the Penguins' bats came alive again, plating three runs in both the fifth and sixth innings to get within three, but Bihl, who struggled in her second appearance of the day, shut down the bottom half of the Dominican line up in the top of the seventh inning to help the Seawolves hold on to a wild win.
Condon, Konieczka and Tolliver led the SSU offense with two hits apiece -- Konieczka pounded out a double, a triple, two RBI and two runs scored to lead the way.Â
Ally Bryant and
Leanna Georges also notched triples in Wednesday's nightcap.
Sonoma State will host 12th-ranked Saint Martin's in a doubleheader Saturday, beginning at Noon before heading to Belmont next Tuesday for a twinbill with Notre Dame de Namur. The Seawolves then return home next Friday and Saturday to open up CCAA play with Cal State Monterey Bay.
