GAME 2: Cal State Dominguez Hills 2, Sonoma State 1 -- Box Score
ROHNERT PARK -- Jon Richards had perhaps his best collegiate outing in game one of Saturday's doubleheader, tossing his first career complete game, allowing seven hits and one run to lift the Sonoma State baseball team to a 6-1 win before Cal State Dominguez Hills rallied late in game two to force a split with a 2-1 score on a warm afternoon at Seawolf Diamond in Rohnert Park. The Seawolves move to 8-8 overall and 7-4 in the CCAA while the Toros are now 10-11 (5-9 CCAA).
Jourdan Weiks had an outstanding day offensively, going 3 for 5 with three RBI and two runs scored and a stolen base.
Alex Crosby also had three hits with an RBI in the twinbill.
In the opener, Sonoma State built a four-run cushion for Richards through the first four innings, including a three-run fourth inning, thanks to a two-RBI single by Weiks and an RBI groundout by
Justin Serrao. The scoring did get started with a Weiks' sacrifice fly in the second, scoring
Garrett Schwartz.
Cal State Dominguez Hills would score its only run of the game in the top half of the fifth on an RBI double by Rico Pena, but Richards settled back down and gave up just three more Toro hits the rest of the way.
With a 4-1 lead in the sixth, Sonoma tacked on a couple of extra runs when Serrao singled to center field, scoring Weiks from second and on the throw home to keep
Jackson Stogner from rounding third and attempting home, Serrao drew an errant throw from the CSUDH catcher on his attempt to reach second base, allowing Stogner to score.
All three of Weiks' RBI's on the day came in game one where he went 2 for 3 with a sac fly. Crosby and
Steven Moen netted a pair of base hits as well. Richards, improving to 2-0, walked one and struckout four, tossing 100 pitches in the two hour, 25-minute affair. Cal State Dominguez Hills starter Tyler Mark (0-3) was tagged with the loss after giving up four runs on seven hits in his four innings of work.
Game two proved to be another pitcher's duel between the two squads. The Toros went with David Haerle, who gave up one run on six hits in six innings pitched before giving way to Joseph Perez in the seventh. The Seawolves countered with
Haydon Turpin, who scattered just two hits to the 19 batters he faced in four and two-thirds innings before
Devin Alexander went the final two and a thirds innings.
Sonoma drew first blood in the fifth on an RBI single by Crosby scoring
Brandon Baranzini, who pinch ran for
Shawn Walters after Walters singled to open up the inning. That would be the only offense by SSU in the nightcap.
It was in the sixth inning that a couple of defensive errors plagued the Seawolves, allowing the Toros to take a 2-1 lead. Sonoma State threatened to rally in its last at bat in the seventh, getting the leadoff batter aboard in Weiks on a four-pitch walk. He got to second on a sacrifice by
Daniel Caresio, then to third on a groundout by Serrao, but the tying run was left stranded on third when Perez got Crosby to pop up to end the game.
Alexander (0-2) was tagged with the loss despite giving up the two runs, both unearned.
Sonoma State and Cal State Dominguez Hills will wrap up the four-game series with a single game scheduled for Sunday at 11:00 am at Seawolf Diamond.
