GAME 2: Sonoma State 11, Cal State Dominguez Hills 6 -- Box Score
CARSON, Calif. -- Amanda Llerena tossed a three-hit shutout in the opener and
Megan Konieczka smashed two more home runs in the series finale as the Sonoma State softball team completed the weekend sweep of host Cal State Dominguez Hills with 1-0 and 11-6 victories on Saturday at Toro Diamond in Carson. The Seawolves (16-10, 10-10 CCAA) have jumped into a tie for fourth place with Cal State San Bernardino in the conference standings while the Toros dipped to seventh place with records of 14-16 overall and 8-12 in the CCAA.
Hayley Condon led the offense with four hits in Saturday's doubleheader, including two doubles and an RBI.
Ancia Purdy pounded out a pair of triples and brought home two runs. Konieczka's only two hits on the day went up and over the outfield fence for her eighth and ninth home runs of the season, increasing her CCAA-leading RBI total to 32.
Leanna Georges went 2 for 5 with a double and three RBI as well.
Llerena's complete-game shutout in game one improved her record to 10-6 this season; she tallied seven strikeouts in the win, upping her league-leading total to 83. The sophomore got the start in game two, but was lifted after giving up five runs in the bottom of the third inning.
Melissa Smith (4-3) was tagged as the winning pitcher in the nightcap before giving way to
Katy Bihl for the final three innings; Bihl was credited with her fourth save of the season.
In the opener, all it took was one run for Sonoma State and it came in the top of the fifth inning on a sacrifice fly by Georges that scored Purdy, who tripled just one pitch earlier. Llerena took it from there, only allowing Cal State Dominguez Hills a bunt single and a walk in the final three innings. Her counterpart, Jamie Duran, was nearly just as effective, giving up four hits and four walks, but the one-out triple to Purdy in the fifth would prove to be the one mistake.
Reminiscent to yesterday's action, after a pitcher's duel in the opener, game two became an offensive showcase by both squads, but it was the visiting Seawolves to bring the explosions, going off for 11 runs on 15 base hits while giving up six runs on nine hits to the Toros.
Sonoma struck first in the third inning when Purdy scored on an error by the CSUDH catcher on a batted ball by Condon. CSU Dominguez Hills responded with a five-spot in the bottom of the third to take a 5-1 lead. However, the Seawolves punched back with seven runs in their next at bat, thanks to two-RBI double by Georges, an RBI single by Condon, an infield RBI single by
Ashley Long, finishing with a three-run blast by Konieczka.
The Toros added a run in the bottom of the fourth, but three more Seawolf runs in the sixth -- a solo shot by Konieczka and a two-run triple by Purdy -- put the game out of question at 11-6, in what eventually became the final score and the icing on top of a four-game sweep of host Cal State Dominguez Hills.
Seven different Seawolves recorded at least two hits in the finale, led by Condon with three -- Long, Konieczka,
Keisi Chinen,
Amanda Rossetta, Purdy and Georges all had two.
Sonoma State will return home to play a couple of mid-week non-conference doubleheaders before hosting Cal State Stanislaus next Friday and Saturday. The Seawolves welcome Dixie State (22-7) into town on Monday for a twinbill starting at 11 am before hosting Pace University (NY), which has played just four games thus far in 2014.
