GAME 2: Sonoma State 8, San Francisco State 7 -- Box Score
SAN FRANCISCO -- The Sonoma State baseball team exploded for 31 hits and 21 runs on Saturday, including 24 and 13, respectively, in game one as the Seawolves recorded victories of 13-4 and 8-7 over host San Francisco State on Saturday at Maloney Field in San Francisco. Sonoma improves to 13-9 overall and moves to the top of the CCAA standings at 11-4 in conference play. The Gators fall below .500 at 12-13 overall and 7-8 in the CCAA.
In the opener, Sonoma State plated four runs in the second inning and two more in the third to take an early 6-0 lead. The Gators got three runs back in the bottom of the third, but the SSU offense continued to take it to SFSU pitching, scoring two runs in the fourth and three more in the fifth to lead 11-3. Another Gator run came across the plate in the fifth, but two more Seawolf runs in the ninth added up to a 13-4 victory in favor of Sonoma State.
Daniel Caresio,
Garrett Schwartz,
Dallas Seidel,
Justin Serrao and
Wesley Wallace all pounded out three hits each -- Schwartz recorded two doubles, Caresio and Wallace with one and
Jackson Stogner smacked a triple in the ballgame.
Jon Richards (2-0) earned the victory on the mound; he went six and a thirds innings, allowing four runs on seven hits, walking one and striking out three.
Anthony Pezzola came on for the final two and two-thirds innings and didn't allow a hit or a run.
In the nightcap, Sonoma drew first blood in the top of the first on an RBI single by
Alex Crosby. SF State got the run back in the second, but SSU responded with five runs in the third to take a 6-1 lead.
The host Gators began to chip away and with a run in the fourth and three more in the fifth, they trailed 6-5 going into the ninth inning. The Seawolves put a couple of extra insurance runs on the board in the top of the ninth -- an RBI single by
Steven Moen and a bases-loaded walk to Stogner -- and those would prove to be huge in the end.
Trailing by three runs at 8-4 going into its final at bat, San Francisco State staged a potent rally. A hit by pitch and three consecutive singles scored a run and loaded the bases, all with just one out. Another run came home to score on a wild pitch to put the Gators down by one with still just one out.
Aaron Gillis came on to pitch for
Cody Lane and intentionally walked his first batter to load the bases and hope for a double play ball. And that's what he got, a groundball to Serrao at third base who turned the 5-4-3 game-ending double play to preserve the win.
Eric Ehlow went 2 for 3 with a triple and three RBI while Caresio and Serrao had a double in the game.
Devin Alexander got the win, improving to 1-2 after taking over for starter
Haydon Turpin in the second. Alexander went three innings and allowed six hits and three unearned runs after Turpin gave up two hits and a run.
Sonoma State and San Francisco State will wrap up the four-game series on Sunday at Seawolf Diamond in Rohnert Park, set for an 11:00 am first pitch.
