GAME 2: Sonoma State 5, Cal State Stanislaus 4 -- Box Score
ROHNERT PARK -- Holli Brown's walkoff bases-loaded single in the bottom of the seventh inning of game two capped Sonoma State's second consecutive series sweep against a CCAA opponent, this time it was visiting Cal State Stanislaus to fall victim after 6-2 and 5-4 victories by the Seawolves, who have won seven straight games and 11 of their last 12 to improve to 23-11 overall and 14-10 in conference play. The Warriors fall to 10-23 (6-18 CCAA).
With a 5 for 7 day at the plate with a double and two runs scored,
Megan Konieczka ended a blistering weekend against Cal State Stanislaus offensively, going 11 for 16 (a .688 batting average) with three doubles, a home run, five RBI and a perfect 4 for 4 in stolen bases to go along with a 1.063 slugging percentage.
Amanda Llerena earned both victories in the circle on Saturday, improving to 13-7 this season. The sophomore right-hander tossed 11 complete innings, allowing 10 hits, four runs, no walks while striking out eight.
Katy Bihl came on in relief for three innings in game one to earn her fifth save of the season despite scattering five hits and giving up two runs.
In the opener, the Seawolves didn't waste any time building a three-run lead thanks to an RBI single by Konieczka and a
Keisi Chinen two-run bomb to straight away center field in the bottom of the first inning. Two more runs came in to score in the third on a two-run double by
Hayley Condon to put SSU up 5-0. Cal State Stanislaus would score a run in the fifth and another in the sixth, but Sonoma State added an insurance run in its half of the fifth inning on another RBI base hit by Condon.
All told, the Seawolves racked up seven hits and tagged Warrior pitcher Natalie Rendon (4-8) with her eighth loss of the season. Konieczka, Chinen and Condon all had two hits each,
Ancia Purdy had the other -- a leadoff triple in the first inning.
In the nightcap, Sonoma got a run home in the second inning on an RBI double by
Ally Bryant, the second two-bagger of her career and the first of the season. The 1-0 lead held up until Cal State Stanislaus pulled even in the fourth after an RBI double by Brianna Nicholson.
Both teams then broke out the offense in the final two innings with the Warriors taking a 3-1 lead with a pair of runs in the top of the sixth. The 3-1 lead wouldn't last long, however, as the Seawolves responded with a two-run single by
Alison Strycula to knot the game at 3-3. Cal State Stanislaus took another lead in the top of the seventh with an RBI single to put the visitors up 4-3, but again, Sonoma State punched back.
Ashley Long and Konieczka hit back-to-back singles and Chinen drew a four-pitch walk to load the bases with no outs. Condon then hit a chopper back to the pitcher Jessica Varady, but Varady had trouble getting a hand on the ball to get the force out at home, allowing the tying run in Long.
Amanda Rossetta did the same thing, but Varady was able to force Konieczka out at home. With the score tied at 4-4 with one out, Brown delivered a rocket through the left side of the infield on the first pitch she saw to bring home the game-winning run in Chinen for the 5-4 Seawolf win.
Konieczka pounded out three hits in the victory while Long and Bryant tallied two for seven of the 10 Sonoma State hits in game two. Llerena allowed nine hits, striking out two in her complete-game effort.
Sonoma State will take a week off before heading to Turlock for the annual Tournament of Champions, hosted by Cal State Stanislaus on Apr. 4-6. However, the Seawolves will play one non-conference game in Turlock the day before (Apr. 3) against Western Washington at Pedretti Park at 4:00 pm.
