FRESNO, Calif. -- Fresno Pacific completed a three-game sweep of Sonoma State by taking both games of Saturday's doubleheader, including a walk-off victory in the final game, with scores of 6-0 and 4-3. The Seawolves drop to 6-7 overall while the Sunbirds improve to 12-8.
Garrett Schwartz went 4 for 7 in the twinbill and
Justin Serrao had two hits, including a double, in the series finale.
The Sunbirds took the first game 6-0 behind strong pitching performances by Wilson Ashford and James Lagorio, as well as a 4 for 5 day from the plate by Baron Bower, who hit his first homerun of the season. The Seawolves were held to just four hits in the opener, two off the bat of Schwartz.
Blake Sack (1-2) took the loss for Sonoma.
In game two, FPU trailed 3-1 heading into the bottom of the seventh before rallying to score three runs for the walk-off win. Prior to the seventh inning, the Seawolves took a 1-0 lead in the second when
Cameron Merriwether brought home a run with the bases loaded on a fielder's choice. The Sunbirds answered with a run in the bottom of the second on a wild pitch by
Jon Richards to tie the game up at one apiece. In the third, SSU plated two more runs, thanks to RBI singles by
Devin Alexander and Wesley Wallce and the 3-1 score would hold until the seventh.
With the Sunbirds down to their final out, Michael Hostetler delivered a two-out, two-RBI single to center that tied the game 3-3. He then stole second and scored on a walk-off single to right by freshman Hunter Villanueva. Villanueva had the game-tying sacrifice fly and scored the winning run in FPU's walk-off win last night as well.
Eian Raeber (2-2) earned the win with four scoreless innings of one-hit ball in relief. Lagorio (1-0) picked up the win in the first game, throwing five scoreless frames out of the bullpen.
Cody Lane (0-1) suffered the loss for SSU.
Sonoma State returns home to Seawolf Diamond next weekend to host Cal State Dominguez Hills in a four-game series, starting with a single game on Friday at 2:00 pm.
