ROHNERT PARK --
Alison Strycula brought home three RBI on a bases-clearing single to right center field in the fourth inning of game one and Aubrie Tolliver delivered a pinch-hit, two-run double in the fifth that proved to be the difference in Sonoma State's thrilling 6-5 victory over ninth-ranked Humboldt State to begin the day, but the Lumberjacks punched right back in the nightcap and won 4-0 to force a split with the Seawolves on Senior Day at the Seawolf Softball Field.  Sonoma moves to 31-15 overall, remaining in fourth place in the CCAA standings at 15-13, just one game ahead of SSU's upcoming opponent, Chico State.  Humboldt stays in third place, moving to 21-7 in conference play (37-11 overall).

In the opener, it looked as if Humboldt State would do its part to spoil Senior Day for the four SSU seniors, taking a 5-1 lead after three innings of play.  The lone Seawolf run prior to the fourth inning was thanks to a leadoff solo home run to left center field by Amanda Rossetta.  Sonoma State, however, wasn't about to let the visitors spoil anything and it would be the underclassmen to come up big.  In the bottom of the fourth inning, Ashley Long drew a leadoff walk, Holli Brown singled through the left side and Ancia Purdy did the same, loading the bases for the freshman Strycula.  Strycula then hit a single into right center field allowing two runs to score and on the throw into home plate from the outfield, Strycula drew a throw from the HSU catcher and was tagged out sliding into second, but it allowed Purdy to score from third base.  When the dust settled, Strycula's single got Sonoma State to within one run at 5-4.

In the bottom of the fifth inning, Keisi Chinen singled up the middle and, after Keeley Ray pinch ran for Chinen, Rossetta walked to put runners on first and second with one out.  Aubrie Tolliver was called upon to pinch hit and, on a 2-2 pitch, she lined a double to right center field, scoring Ray and Rossetta for the 6-5 lead.

Melissa Smith, who relieved Katy Bihl in the top of the fourth inning, took over from there.  The junior transfer proceeded to shut down the powerful Humboldt State lineup in her four innings of work, allowing just one hit -- a two-out double in the sixth inning that was eventually left stranded on base.  She earned the victory, improving to 7-3 this season.  Bihl, meanwhile, tossed the first three innings and give up five hits, five runs (three earned) and walked one.

Strycula, Megan Konieczka, Brown and Purdy each had two hits in game one as the Seawolves pounded out a total of 12 hits against Lumberjack ace Katie Obbema (16-7).

It was more of a defensive showcase for both teams in the nightcap as three double plays were turned, two of which were done by the Seawolves in back-to-back innings to end the third and fourth.  In fact, the one double play turned by the Lumberjacks came in the bottom of the third, therefore three half innings in a row ended with double plays.

Humboldt State finally broke through for a couple of runs in the fifth after an RBI hit-by-pitch and a sacrifice fly, both with the bases loaded.  HSU plated two more runs in the seventh on a two-run double by Tiffany Hollingsworth to lead 4-0, a deficit Sonoma State couldn't overcome.  'Jacks pitcher Liz Perez (12-4) earned the complete game shutout, allowing six hits, two walks and four hit batsmen, striking our four.  She didn't allow a baserunner beyond second base in the final three innings.

Amanda Llerena (18-9) was tagged with the loss, giving up two runs on six hits in four and two-thirds innings.  Bihl worked the final two and a thirds innings, scattering three hits and giving up two runs (one earned).

While Humboldt State's Dani Randall extended her hitting streak to 19 games on Saturday, Sonoma State's Strycula also extended her hitting streak to 13 games, one shy of Konieczka's season's-best 14 games.  The freshman went 6 for 16 in her first taste of the leadoff spot this season; she added a double, triple and four RBI on the weekend.  Purdy and Rossetta also had five hits apiece in the four-game series against Humboldt.

Sonoma State will now hit the road for its final eight games of the regular season, beginning with a crucial four-game series at Chico State, beginning Friday at 1:00 pm.
