GAME 2: Sonoma State 3, Cal State Stanislaus 2 -- Box Score
ROHNERT PARK -- Jackson Stogner went 3 for 7 with a double, an RBI and two runs scored and five others recorded two hits each as the Sonoma State baseball team completed a four-game sweep of Cal State Stanislaus with 6-3 and 3-2 victories on Sunday at Seawolf Diamond in Rohnert Park.
The Seawolves (25-12, 22-6 CCAA), who have clinched a spot in the CCAA Championship Tournament in Stockton in two weeks, have the opportunity to win the conference's regular season title next weekend when they host Chico State for three games on Friday and Saturday before the series shifts to Sacramento for the Capital City Clash at Raley Field on Sunday in the season finale. The Warriors fell to 12-32 (6-29 CCAA).
In the opener, Cal State Stanislaus drew first blood in the top of the second inning on an RBI double by Eriksen Dickens, scoring Cameron Irinaga from first base. Sonoma State evened the ballgame at 1-1 in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI single up the middle by
Eric Ehlow, scoring
Jackson Stogner, who reached on a leadoff double down the left field line.
The Warriors didn't waste much time to take the lead right back, plating a run in the top of the fifth, but the Seawolves responded with a bases-clearing double by
Dallas Seidel in the bottom of the sixth to go ahead 4-2.
Sonoma added a pair of insurance runs – one in the seventh on a sacrifice fly by Ehlow and one in the eighth on another sac fly by
Jourdan Weiks – to lead 6-2. Cal State Stanislaus broke through for a run in its last at bat and threatened for more, but
Aaron Gillis (1-2), who replaced
Haydon Turpin in the fifth, got out of his own jam and secured the 6-3 victory to earn his first win on the mound thisseason. In four and two-thirds innings, Gillis gave up one run on five hits with a walk and four strikeouts. Turpin worked the first four and a thirds innings, also giving up five hits, two runs (one earned) while striking outtwo.
Stogner went 3 for 4 in the opener with two runs scored and seven other Seawolves recorded a hit.
Warriors starter Dustin Baisdon (1-6) suffered the loss after tossing five innings and giving up six hits, four runs and three walks, fanning four.
In the series finale, Sonoma State opened up a three-run lead after a run in the third inning (sac fly by Stogner) and two more in the fourth (two-RBI single by
Shawn Walters). Walters' two-run single would prove to be critical down the stretch as Cal State Stanislaus plated a run in the sixth and another in the eighth, but came up just one run short of tying the game.
Daniel Caresio went 2 for 2 with a triple while Seidel and
Wesley Wallace both smacked doubles.
Devin Alexander, who got the start at first base and later earned his second save on the mound for pitching the final one and two-thirds innings, went 2 for 3 at the plate. SSU starter
Matt Hammonds (2-0) got the win; he went the first six frames, allowing five hits and one run, striking out four.
Cal State Stanislaus starter Nick Ippolito (2-5) was tagged with the loss after going six innings and allowing seven hits, three runs and three walks. Marcus Mastrobuoni went 2 for 4 with two RBI in the contest.
