BOX SCORE Sonoma State 16, Cal State San Bernardino 6 -- Box Score
SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. -- Sonoma State crushed Cal State San Bernardino pitching for 17 hits and a season-high 16 runs on Sunday afternoon to complete a four-game sweep of the Coyotes with a 16-6 win. The Seawolves managed their third all-time series sweep in San Bernardino and their first since 2008. Sunday marked Sonoma's ninth straight win in conference play as they improve their first place mark to 16-4 in CCAA action (18-10 overall).
Facing a sweep on their home field, the Coyotes came out strong in Sunday's finale, knocking out Sonoma starter
Matt Hammonds in the midst of a four-run second inning. The teams would trade runs in the third to make it 5-1 before the Sonoma offense really got rolling.
While the Seawolves had been knocking on the door, they had come up empty, stranding seven runners through the first three innings. Their fortunes changed in the fourth when they plated four, thanks to three hits and a pair of Coyote errors.
Leading 7-6 after six innings, the Seawolves pulled away with nine combined runs over the seventh and eighth. Big hits came from
Eric Ehlow,
Garrett Schwartz,
Justin Serrao,
Wesley Wallace, and
Steven Moen as Sonoma flexed their collective muscles with nine hits in the two frames.
Building on yesterday's five-RBI performance in game two, Stogner kept smashing, going 3 for 5 with three runs and four RBIs on Sunday. The Sebastopol native went 8 for 16 in the series, lifting his batting average from .218 to .266. He has bumped his RBI total from eight to 17 in the last two games.
Jourdan Weiks had three hits and both
Daniel Caresio and Serrao scored three times.
Jayson Richards got the win after a three-inning relief appearance in which he allowed just three hits and no runs.
The Seawolves have a scheduled bye next weekend. They will return to conference play on Thursday, April 17th against Cal State Monterey Bay.
