INDIANAPOLIS -- For the seventh straight year, and for the eighth time in nine seasons, the Sonoma State softball team is headed to the big dance! It was announced Monday morning that the Seawolves (39-19), who finished third in last weekend's CCAA tournament in Stockton, have qualified for the 2015 NCAA Division II Softball Championship Tournament as the No. 5 seed and will open up the West 1 Regional on Friday against No. 4 seed Humboldt State (41-17) in Seaside.
Top-seed Cal State Monterey Bay (47-10) will serve as the host of the West 1 Regional and will play No. 8 seed Montana State Billings (29-21) in the other first round game on Friday. Times have yet to be determined.
No. 2 seed Dixie State (44-7) will serve as the host of the West 2 Regional in St. George, Utah and will open up the NCAA tournament on Thursday against No. 7 seed Saint Martin's (41-18). No. 3 seed California Baptist (40-9) plays No. 6 Chico State (28-20) in the other first-round game in Utah on Thursday. The winner of each sub-regional this weekend will play each other in an NCAA Super Regional next weekend (May 15-16) at the site of the highest remaining seed for the right to advance to the NCAA Division II Softball World Series in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma in two weeks.
This will mark the ninth NCAA Division II Tournament appearance for Sonoma State all-time -- the program is 8-18 in NCAA tournament games and has yet to advance beyond a sub-regional. Last season, the Seawolves went 0-2 in the West sub-regional, also in Seaside.
