ROHNERT PARK, Calif. -- The Sonoma State men's tennis team made their home debut on Friday afternoon, but it would be the 33rd-ranked Holy Names Hawks emerging with a 9-0 win thanks to sweeps in both singles and doubles competitions.
Daniel Holz turned in a brilliant effort in his match at No. 1 singles, but a cramp late in the match forced him to retire just as he and his opponent were set to go into a third set tiebreaker.
The loss drops the Seawolves to 0-2 on the season while the Hawks improve to 1-2.
The most competitive doubles match came on Court 2 as
Sullivan Roche and
Christian Francisco battled, but lost, 8-3. The Hawks took the matches at No. 1 and No. 3 by identical 8-1 scores.
Holz was outstanding on Friday, downing his regionally-ranked opponent Hugo Calpart 6-2 in the first set before falling 7-6 in the second. His second set was marred by a leg cramp that saw him hobble throught the final point before throwing in the towel before a third set tiebreaker could begin.
Logan Liddell was the next closest to pulling out a win, but he was defeated at No. 3, 6-2, 7-5.
The Seawolves return to the courts tomorrow when they host George Fox University, an NCAA Division III school from Newberg, Oregon.
