Seawolves Place Third in CCAA, Fall To Otters

CHICO, Calif. -- The Sonoma State Men's Golf Team competed in the CCAA Golf Tournament at the Butte Creek Country Club. The first part of the event started Monday morning and consisted of three 18-hole rounds of golf. These rounds determined the top four teams in the conference to participate in match play where the finalists would competed for the conference title and an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.

As a team the Seawolves put up 308-289-295 for a total of 892 (+28) over the three rounds. They tied with Cal State San Bernardino and placed third in the qualification round of the conference tournament. Chico State, as a team, scored 878 (+14) qualifying for first, and Cal State Monterey Bay shot 880 (+16) and would qualifying for second.

Spencer Clapp would score the lowest for the Sonoma golfers shooting 75-69-73 (+1), which was good enough for third place. The Individual champion, Elis Svard from Monterey Bay, shot a 75-69-66 (-6). The Sonoma State junior from Federal Way, Washington also was selected for the All-Tournament Team.

After completion of the qualifying rounds, the four-team single-elimination tournament started. #1 seeded Chico State faced off with #4 Cal State San Bernardino, while #2 seeded Cal State Monterey Bay played #3 Sonoma State. In match play each team has five players who go up against individual players from the opposing team, competing only against that player. In match play, a match is won by whomever accumulates the most won holes, by shooting a lower score than their competitor at that hole. Both players can tie a hole, which doesn't affect the score.

The Seawolves lost to the Otters 3-2 in match play. Devin Gregg defeated Kirabo Reed by five strokes in the second group. Dexter Simonds defeated Callum Carlstrom by three strokes in the final group. Ian Hofmann lost to Maximilian Grieb by four strokes. Spencer Clapp fell to Elis Svard by four strokes and Armand Melendez lost to Edward Hackett by nine strokes.
The Otters will go on to take on Chico State in the championship match tomorrow morning. As for the Seawolves, their fate will prove dependent on selection committee to see whether their season will continue on to the 2018 NCAA West/South Central Super Regional in Amarillo, Texas.
