Rohnert Park, CA - This year's Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches saw 7 Seawolves named to the honor for their efforts in the classroom. The ACWPC breaks down the academic recognitions into three categories based on individual GPA during the spring water polo season. OUTSTANDING recognition means the student-athlete earned between a 3.71-4.0 GPA, SUPERIOR is equivalent to a 3.41-3.70 GPA and EXCELLENT is between a 3.20-3.40 GPA. Sonoma State saw 1 nominee in the EXCELLENT category, 4 in the SUPERIOR category and 2 were given the highest recognition of OUTSTANDING.
Utility player and senior, Hailey Gellert earned a spot on the 2020 ACWPC Academic team earning a 3.38 GPA during the 2020 spring season. Gellert played in 15 games as a senior for Sonoma State during the shortened spring season where she netted 9 goals and recorded 7 assists. Gellert was a threat on both ends of the pool and was a terrific transfer player for the Seawolves during her two years. Keeper Allison Dugdale recorded a 3.42 GPA for SUPERIOR recognition during the spring season. Dugdale appeared in 9 games for Sonoma State and made 5 starts during the spring season. Dugdale went 1-2 in the net and recorded 39 saves for SSU. As a junior college transfer, Dugdale provided plenty of depth and talent in the net as she recorded over 100 career saves in her 2-year career at Sierra College.Â
Center Cameron Gavuzzi earned herself a 3.45 GPA. Out of Citrus Valley HS, Cameron was a very talented player with a lot of potential as a true sophomore. During her freshman season, Gavuzzi played in 21 games for the Seawolves and scored 5 goals. Fellow sophomore Camille Grace recorded a 3.47 GPA during her spring semester at Sonoma State to earn her 2020 ACWPC Academic Team honors. As a true freshman Camille also made a significant impact during her freshman campaign with SSU as she played in 24 games and recorded 7 goals on 16 shots. Â
Morgan Jones was a dynamic attacker for the Seawolves in her 3-year career. Before transferring to Sonoma State, Jones played in 31 games at Sierra College where she recorded 65 points on 32 goals and 33 assists! During the 2020 season, Jones played in all 17 games and was fourth on the team in scoring with 12 goals. Alyssa Russell-Sadoff was 1 of 2 Seawolves named with OUTSTANDING distinction in the ACWPC as she recorded an impressive 3.86 GPA! Alyssa not only excelled in the classroom but also in the pool. The junior guard transferred to SSU from Santa Barbara City College where she recorded 33 goals and 61 assists during her two years there. Playing in all 17 games for Sonoma State, Alyssa scored 3 goals and recorded 5 assists during the Seawolves spring season. Â
Finally for Sonoma State, and the team's highest GPA during the spring season is junior attacker Julia Hemphill! Julia earned OUTSTANDING honors with a staggering 3.92 GPA! Julia played in all 17 games for the Seawolves this spring and recorded 2 goals along with 1 assist. As a team, the Seawolves water polo program recorded a 3.26 GPA in the classroom during the 2020 spring season. 14 of the team's 23 student-athletes recorded a 3.00 GPA or higher. Congratulations to all 7 Seawolf student-athletes for their success in the classroom this year and earning ACWPC Academic honors!Â
