MGOLF: Pace Records Career Best 11-Under Par to Capture Individual Title at Wildcat Classic

MARYSVILLE, CALIF. - On Tuesday, October 11th, the Sonoma State men's golf team recorded one of their most consistent tournament performances this season as they would place third at the Chico State Wildcat Classic, held at Peachtree Golf & Country Club. The Seawolves would record the low round of the tournament with a 275 (-13) in their second round on Monday to hold the top spot into the final round today. Senior star Griffin Pace would lead the way with back-to-back 66's to conclude the first day of action. Pace recorded just one bogey in his first two rounds and went bogey free in his second round to help put SSu at the top of the leaderboard.

Round 1 (282) & Round 2 (275):

Three of Sonoma State's five golfers would record rounds even par or better to open up the tournament. Former CCAA golfer of the week Colin Huang would continue his impressive freshman campaign and finish just behind pace with an opening round 69 (-3). Despite four bogey's, Huang eagled the par 5 6th and finished his first round with five birdies to help the Seawolves to a 282 (-6) first round. Fellow newcomer Sean Markham would record three straight birdies on the front nine to finish his first round even par.

The Seawolves young squad would ride the momentum into the turn as they kicked off their second round of the day and see the team's scorecard flooded with red figures as they would combine to shoot the low team round of the tournament and finish the day atop the leaderboard. The team's 275 (-13) second round would be highlighted by two all-time performances from the program's two hottest golfers right now in Griffin Pace and Colin Huang. Pace and Huang would each record 6-under performances in their second round and combine for 13 birdies to cpnclude the first day of action. Even more impressive was the fact that Pace went bogey free for a near flawless round while Huang recorded just one bogey and seven birdies to finish with a 66 (-6). Huang's 66 would finish two strokes better than his first and third round 68 at the NCAA West Region Fall Preview two week's ago, giving him a new career low. Teammates Sean Markham and Aiden Oliver would add rounds of even par or better to also contribute to the team's massive 13-under performance. The two would combine for nine birdies of their own to conclude the day.

Final Round (289):

Despite leading the tournament heading into the final day, several teams would struggle but the Seawolves would record their highest round of the tournament and fall two spots to finish alone in third place. Pace and Huang would cool off and combine for just a 1-over finish. The only round under par would go to newcomer Moses Greene as he put together a very solid round with two birdies and just a single bogey to finish with a 71 (-1) and tie his season low. Despite the bitter finish, the Seawolves would take home some hardware on the individual leaderboard as senior Griffin Pace would win his first collegiate tournament and finish the week with a 205 (-11) performance, besting fellow CCAA competitor Chris Ebster from Stanislaus State. Freshman Colin Huang would record back-to-back top-5 finishes to kickoff his collegiate career and finish t-4th at 9-under.

Aiden Oliver and Sean Markham would round out the top-30, finishing in a tie for 29th place out of nearly 70 golfers. Moses Greene would jump 10 spots on the final day with his 71 (-1) performance to finish t-44th. Despite relinquishing the top spot after the first two rounds, head coach Val Verhunce and his squad remain in solid form with some stellar individual performances and a -13 second round, going down as the lowest team round of the season thus far.

Sonoma State will turn right back around and head to the coast to compete in the Otter Invitational, hosted by fellow CCAA member Cal State Monterey Bay. First and second rounds will take place on Monday, October 17th at Bayonet Golf Course and the live scoring link can be found at sonomaseawolves.com. Be sure to follow your Seawolves on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter to get all the latest SSU athletics updates and information.
