WGOLF: Two Top-15 Finishes Earn Seawolves 5th Place in First Event of 2022-23 Campaign

SOUTH JORDAN, UTAH - The Sonoma State women's golf team began their Fall season this past weekend in South Jordan, Utah, competing in the Westminster Wasatch Invite at Glenmoor Golf Club, where they placed fifth amongst the 12 competing teams.

Conditions were challenging to say the least during the first event of the year for SSU and the rest of the field where the winning team score, University of Tampa, was 27-over-par. Sonoma would finish the week shooting 66-over-par, two strokes behind Texas A&M International. Only one player all week was able to break par, and the eventual winner of the event, Ann Maria Jimenez Rios from the University of Tampa, did it with first and second-round one-under par-71's.

A fresh face for Sonoma State, first-year player Talia Gutman, had a standout performance in her first collegiate tournament for the Seawolves. Gutman would finish the week in a tie for thirteenth individually at 12-over-par and one stroke behind Junior Lauren Garcia, who finished in a tie for tenth. Gutman also had the low round of the week for Sonoma shooting a strong one-over 73 in difficult conditions in the final round to jump up eight spots. Garcia would pace the Seawolves for the first two days shooting the low score for the team in both rounds with three-over-par 75's. Garcia faltered slightly on the final day with a five-over 77, but still was the highest individual finish for Sonoma State.

Gutman struggled slightly in the first round but improved her score with each round leading to the final day where it all clicked. Gutman birdied the second and fourth hole before giving it back with a double bogey on the next. Gutman kept it in check after that, only bogeying the fourteenth hole on the way to a one-over 73.
Junior Amelia Gladys would open the tournament with a solid five-over-par 77, which put her in a tie for nineteenth after the first day. The following two rounds were challenging for the entire field, but Gladys put together gritty 79's while the rest of the field struggled around her to jump up two spots and a tie for twenty-second.
