VISTA, CALIF. - The Sonoma State men's golf team teed off this week in San Diego at the Cal State San Marcos Fujikura Invite. They came into the week excited to compete and hungry for another win. After finishing tied for fourth last year, the team returned with a chip on their shoulder to do better. However, despite shooting the same score as last year the Seawolves place 5th.
The team understandably got off to a slow start having one solid round of even par by second year golfer
Aidan Oliver.
Lucas Happy and
Jules Lavigne shot four over,
Colin Huang shot five-over and
Griffin Pace shot six-over-par. The first round total had the team at 13-over-par with some work to do.
The second round had great promise for the Seawolves that was met with adversity when Pace was forced to withdraw due to injury. Oliver had a stellar round of two under par thanks to three birdies and a hole-out eagle from 55 yards. Lavigne played great even keeled golf and shot even par. Huang shot a decent three over and Happy finished his second round at seven over par due to some unfortunate double bogeys. With the withdrawal of Pace, the team was forced to take all four scores which added up to eight over par.
With day one completed the team looked to have a better second day. With some well needed rest
Griffin Pace made a return to play on the final day of the tournament. He battled through the round and shot a very nice round of one-over-par and Huang, not playing his best, shot three over again. Jules played stellar and shot two under and
Aidan Oliver once again played consistently and shot one over par to secure a really nice fourth place finish. The team finished the third round at three over par and secured the second best team score of the day. The team would fight their way back to a top-5 finish to kickoff their 2023 campaign. They will look to regroup and get healthy before they head back down south for the Battle in the Desert hosted by Cal State San Bernardino on Monday, February 27th.
