ROHNERT PARK, CALIF. - The Sonoma State baseball team dropped their series finale last weekend against 5th ranked San Bernardino, giving them the 3-1 series defeat. The Seawolves were able to grab a quality win against the nationally ranked Yotes in the second game of Saturday's doubleheader behind a complete game pitching performance from junior right hander
Tanner Fonoti.
Despite giving up a season high 14 runs per game in the road series, head coach
John Goelz and his group will look to capitalize on a five-game home stand with a make up game against Cal State East Bay on Tuesday and then a four-game series with Dominguez Hills starting on Thursday.
INDIVIDUAL PERFORMERS:
The Seawolves do have four hitters with a .270 average or better at the plate as first year players
Kenny Decelle and
Cooper Callison have made their impact felt early in the season. Decelle has played in 18 of the teams 21 games, holds a solid .281 average and leads the way with 14 RBI's. Callison has been streaking lately after a slow start to the season, recording hits in three of his last five games.
Veteran first baseman
Christopher Wright has exploded for a career start to the season, maintaining a .286 average while also leading the team with 20 hits and 3 home runs. After playing in just 7 games last season, junior outfielder
Joey Loveless has also stormed onto the scene as a consistent DH for the Seawolves. Loveless has played in a career high 20 games so far this season and owns a .273 average with hits in 6 of his last 7 games. Loveless capped off the San Bernardino series in style with his first two home runs of his SSU career.
On the mound, right hander
Tanner Fonoti has solidified himself as the team's #1 starter this season after making 13 appearances last season, primarily out of the bullpen. Fonoti is coming off back-to-back wins for the Seawolves over quality opponents in Chico State and 5th ranked San Bernardino. He has already matched his season high in wins with three and has lowered his ERA to 3.65. He highlighted the weekend for Sonoma State with his first career complete game, going all 7 innings in the second game of Saturday's doubleheader to give SSU the 5-2 victory.
Left hander
Michael Panichi joined the Seawolves program this season out of Crean Lutheran HS and has proven to be one of the team's best backend pitchers this season. He maintains a 0.00 ERA with a team high 2 saves in 6 appearances. He has allowed just 5 hits on the year and has yet to give up a run in his 6.2 innings of work.
