SOUTH JORDAN, UTAH - On Tuesday, September 26th, the Sonoma State women's golf team traveled to South Jordan, Utah to compete in their first event of the season at the DII 54 for IX event hosted by RMAC member Westminster. The Seawolves grabbed the lead after the first round and never looked back as they went on to record the second lowest team score of the week in the final round and win the event by six strokes. The victory goes down as the team's second win in their previous three events dating back to last spring when SSU took home the team title in their Spring Invite at the Santa Rosa Golf and Country Club.
Sophomore
Avery Foster made her Seawolf debut in dominant fashion as she finished the three round event 9-over-par good for 2nd place individually. Teammate and second year member
Talia Gutman followed with an impressive t-5th place finish as she picked up right where she left off after earning All-Conference honors last season.
ROUND 1 AND 2
On Sunday, head coach
Val Verhunce and his group would finish the day at +28 but hold a one stroke lead over PacWest member Biola. The initial day played tough for the entire field but junior
Lauren Garcia would lead the way for the Seawolves with a 77 (+5) to help maintain their advantage over the Eagles.
SSU would shave off an impressive eleven strokes in the second round on Monday and finish with the second lowest team score of the day to increase their lead to five strokes.
Avery Foster and
Talia Gutman would be a huge part of the Seawolves charge as Foster finished 1-under-par with five birdies on the day. Gutman would put together her best round of the week with three birdies on the back nine to finish 2-over-par.
Lauren Garcia and
Aly Hutchinson would go down as the other two counting scores for SSU.
FINAL ROUND
Biola would make a charge of their own in the final round on Tuesday, posting a tournament low 301 (+13), but Sonoma State would put together another quality round and record their lowest team score of the tournament at 302 (+14). This was the best round for the team's four counting scores as all four Seawolves finished 6-over-par or better. Foster led the way once again with a 74 (+2) and senior
Courtney Cervellin would match Gutman with a 75 (+3). The fourth counting score for SSU would come from Garcia who recorded two birdies on the front nine and finished 6-over-par on the day.
Four of the team's five golfers placed inside the top-20 individually to give the Seawolves their first win of the 2023-24 season. Cervellin jumped nine spots with her final round of 3-over-par and four year member
Aly Hutchinson rounded out the group in a tie for 47th place.
