BETHLEHEM, PA- The 2024 season has been a dominant one for Sonoma State Women's Cross Country. Already this season they have secured a first place finish at the Seawolf Invitational, a third place finish at the Greeno/Dirksen Invitational and now add another meet victory to their resume. The Seawolves made the journey to Bethlehem, Pennsylvania where they put together an outstanding team effort en route to claiming victory at the 50th Annual Paul Short Run!
As has been the case for much of the year, Constance O'Neal tore up the course. Across six kilometers O'Neal posted a 21:31.4 time and an individual first place finish. It wasn't a particularly close competition as O'Neal finished an impressive 19 seconds ahead of the second place finisher.Â
Alongside the emergence of O'Neal, freshman phenom Makenzie Kordic is having an outstanding debut collegiate season. Coming into today's race Kordic had already posted individual finishes of 4th and 2nd place. Today, she once again finished in the top five running 22:14.1. She was also the top freshman finisher on the day.
Team captain and senior Sophie Rodriguez had her best individual finish of the season as well. A key veteran leader, Rodriguez came in seventh place on the day behind a 23:01.5 finishing time. For such a young team looking to make some noise at the upcoming CCAA Championship meet, Rodriguez's performance both on and off the course will be critical.Â
Scarlett Riddle was also able to represent the freshman class well with a 10th place individual finish. Riddle ran stride for stride with Rodriguez for most of the race with the pair only separated by a single second through the first mile. Despite Rodriguez pulling away ever so slightly, Riddle still only finished six seconds behind her team captain.
Rounding out the Seawolves racing rotation was Angeline Gutierrez and Sammy Ebell. Gutierrez came through the first mile in an impressive 6:02.6. Gutierrez would claim 45th place out of 245 runners on the day.Â
Thanks to four top 10 finishers the Seawolves have won their second meet of the season. Any questions about the youth on this team have been answered. With a great blend of experienced runners and talented young pieces, the Seawolves are locked and loaded for the CCAA Championship meet which is only a few short weeks away!
