LINCOLN, NEB.- Sonoma State Cross Country made the trip to Lincoln, Nebraska to compete in the Greeno/Dirksen Invitational early this morning. Against a field that featured runners from over 35 programs, the young Seawolves more than held their own. Thanks to a well rounded team effort Coach Lawerence's squad took third overall in the Gold Division which consists of Division II, Division III, NAIA and Junior Colleges. Constance O'Neal was the winner of this division with a season best and personal best for five kilometers.Â
Leading the way once again was Constance O'Neal. O'Neal, fresh off her first place finish at the Seawolf Invitational, picked up right where she left off. The junior brought home a first place finish among all Gold Division athletes. Her time of 17:45.06 only trailed three other runners, all of which represented Division I teams.
Freshman Makenzie Kordic has also been outstanding in her first collegiate season. Kordic was the top freshman on the day with a time of 18:26.79. Only two Division II runners would finish ahead of her with both of them being upperclassmen. Kordic is firmly cementing herself as one of the top runners on the team regardless of age as she secured a fourth overall finish.
Fellow first year runners Scarlett Riddle and Samantha Ebell were also solid in their Nebraska debuts. Riddle finished the five kilometer course in 19:20.72. Ebell also posted a sub-20 time on the day with a solid 19:49.42 for just over three miles.Â
Rounding out the Seawolves top five was senior and team captain Sophie Rodriguez. Rodriguez was also able to come in under 20 minutes as well, giving the Seawolves a scoring quintet that all finished within the top 85 out of field featuring well over 200 athletes.
Angeline Gutierrez, another freshman, put together another quality race in her second time toeing the line for Sonoma State. Gutierrez crossed the finish line in 20:28.37.
After another great team effort, the Seawolves are taking a young core and improving rapidly. The team will get back on the starting line on October 5th as they look to keep the momentum rolling at the Paul Short Run hosted by Lehigh University!
