Abeyta Helps Lead Mexican National Team at the FIBA Word Cup Pre-Qualifying Tournament

Mexico City, Mexico-While most of the Sonoma State community has had their eyes on the start of the school year, women's basketball head coach Des Abeyta has been taking her coaching expertise to the international stage! Coach Abeyta was named an assistant coach with the Mexican National Women's Basketball team this summer. Her primary focus with the Mexican national team has been the FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup Pre-Qualifying Tournament in Mexico City.

Abeyta would help lead the team to the semifinal round where they would face the Czechia national team. Prior to the semifinal round Abeyta's squad would manage victories over Mozambique and New Zealand in group play as they qualified for the single elimination portion of the tournament. Despite falling to the eventual tournament champions in a competitive match Abeyta expressed how honored she felt for the opportunity to coach in front of the world: "Being able to serve as an assistant coach on the Mexican National Women's Basketball Team is a tremendous honor. It is a terrific opportunity to aid in the growth of our game in an international setting. Being of hispanic descent this has been a special opportunity to get to work with Mexico's top basketball players and key figures in the Mexican basketball organization."

This is not Abeyta's first time coaching at the global level. She had spent time working with Mexico's head coach Lindsey Harding as both served on the South Sudan National Team's staff as well. With her time at the FIBA tournament coming to an end, the Sonoma State community is proud of coach Abeyta as she not only represented herself but Sonoma State basketball exceptionally while standing among some of the top basketball talent in the world. Fans of Seawolf basketball should be counting down the days till Abeyta is back on the sidelines of The Wolves' Den!
