BOX SCORE 4 The Sonoma State softball team won three of their four games at the 2025 Tournament of Champions, sweeping Vanguard and Simon Fraser on Friday before splitting with Central Washington and Saint Martin's of Saturday. The Seawolves moved to 8-5 on the season with the three wins.
SSU opened the tournament with a 2-1 victory over Vanguard. The Seawolves' offense was sparked by
Sophia Newcomb, who blasted a two-run inside-the-park homerun in the bottom of the 3rd inning. The homerun was Newcomb's second inside-the-park homer of the season.
Charlie Johnson did the rest with a dominant performance in the circle. Johnson went the distance, allowing just one unearned run, striking out four and picking up her 3
rd win of the season. Vanguard attempted a rally in the 5th, loading the bases with one out, but Johnson induced a fielder's choice and a flyout to escape the jam. They threatened again in the 7
th with the tying run at 3
rd base, but Johnson shut the door, securing the win for the Seawolves.
In Friday's nightcap, SSU secured a hard-fought 6-4 victory against the Simon Fraser. A strong offensive showing, highlighted by
Jasmine Moreno's home run and Newcomb's clutch hitting, propelled the Seawolves to their second win of the season.
The Seawolves jumped to an early lead in the top of the first inning. Newcomb led off with a single, stole second, and then capitalized on
Taylor Rapp's RBI single to put Sonoma State on the board. They added another run in the second when
Carissa Marquez singled, stole second, advanced to third on a flyout, and scored on a squeeze bunt by
Amari Houston.
Simon Fraser responded in the bottom of the third, scoring two runs after a fielding error and a sacrifice fly, tying the game 2-2. Sonoma State regained the lead in the fourth when
Lauren Mirtoni singled home
Gabby Enyart. Moreno then launched a solo home run in the fifth, extending the lead to 4-3.
The Seawolves added crucial insurance runs in the sixth inning. After Marquez singled and Houston followed with another single, Newcomb delivered a clutch single to center field, driving in two runs and giving Sonoma State a 6-3 advantage.
Simon Fraser attempted a comeback in the seventh, scoring a run, but
Alexis Camberos, who pitched a complete game, shut the door, securing the 6-4 victory for Sonoma State. Camberos earned her second win of the season, pitching 7 innings, allowing 4 runs on 9 hits, and striking out a career high 8.
Sonoma State started slow on Saturday, falling to Central Washington 9-1 in the morning game before rebounding with a 10-2, 5-inning over Saint Martin's in the finale. The Seawolves' offense exploded for 10 runs against the Saints with Johnson earning her 4
th win of the season and 2
nd of the weekend.
SSU started slowly but gained momentum as the game progressed. After a scoreless first inning,
Kaiya Dickens broke the ice in the second, singling through the left side to drive in
Olivia Gabriel and give Sonoma State a 1-0 lead. In the third, Mirtoni tripled to right-center and then scored on a sacrifice fly by Rapp, extending the Seawolves' advantage to 2-0.
The floodgates opened in the fourth when Sonoma State tacked on three more runs. Marquez walked, then scored on Houston's double to left-center. Newcomb followed with a single up the middle, bringing Houston home before Newcomb stole home, increasing the lead to 5-0.
The Seawolves put the game out of reach in the fifth with a five-run outburst.
Jasmine Moreno walked, Rapp singled, and
Iris Bejarano singled to load the bases.
Danyelle Castillo then delivered a clutch two-RBI single. Later in the inning, with runners on second and third, Houston singled through the left side to plate the final run.
Johnson pitched a complete game, allowing one run on five hits. Houston led the Seawolves with a double and 3 RBIs, Dickens added two hits and an RBI, and Newcomb chipped in with two hits, an RBI, and a stolen base.
Sonoma State is back in action on Tuesday for their first game on campus when they take on Dominican for a doubleheader at Seawolf Softball Field. First pitch is scheduled for 12:00 pm and the game will be streamed on FloCollege.
