ARCATA, Calif- Despite a furious comeback down the stretch, Sonoma State was handed an 80-78 loss in their CCAA opener on Wednesday night at Humboldt State. The Seawolves see their three-game winning streak snapped as they go to 3-2, 0-1 CCAA. The Lumberjacks extend their winning streak to seven straight as they improve to 7-2, 1-0 CCAA.
The first half was tight as neither team could hold on to a lead. In fact, neither team had the lead at the break as the teams entered the locker room tied at 31.
Trailing 39-38, the Lumberjacks used a 12-3 run to capture the momentum midway through the second half. Humboldt would push the lead to as many as ten with under three minutes left, but the Seawolves simply refused to go away quietly.
Three-pointers by
Mike Nelson,
Casey McRoberts,
Gerred Link, and
Ben Washington inside of three minutes left pulled the Seawolves close, but the hot hand on the night belonged to Zac Tiedeman of Humboldt. Tiedeman, the son of SSU Hall of Famer Steve Tiedeman, had 25 points and was 9-of-10 from the free throw line in an impressive performance.
For the fourth time in five games,
James Sandoval paced the Seawolves in scoring as the junior finished with 18 points on 6-of-10 shooting. He also snagged seven rebounds.
Keith Garner had 13 points and nine rebounds while Washington posted 13 points and four assists.
Joining Tiedeman in double digits for Humboldt was Elliot Babcock-Krenk, who finished with 18 points.
