LOS ANGELES, Calif- Though the final score showed a 14-7 UCLA win, the Sonoma State water polo team held their own against the top ranked collegiate water polo team in the nation, outscoring the Bruins 5-4 in the second half.
The Bruins (26-0) got out to leads of 5-1 after one quarter and 10-2 at the half. The Seawolves (11-12) outscored the Bruins 3-2 in quarter number three and the teams were squared at two goals apiece in the fourth.
Holly Armijo,
Samantha Burchard, and
Laurel Stricklin each had two goals to lead Sonoma State.
Lysa Lombard made seven saves in the net for SSU.
The match was a homecoming of sorts for Sonoma State head coach,
Coralie Simmons. Simmons was a two-time national player of the year for the Bruins.
The Seawolves have a couple more tough matches coming up in Southern California on Sunday.
