Freiberg Grand Slam Caps Incredible Comeback

BELMONT, Calif-  Sonoma State used a two-out rally, capped by a Nikki Freiberg grand slam, to defeat Notre Dame de Namur 7-3 in the first game of a non-conference doubleheader on Monday in Belmont.  The Seawolves dropped game two by that same 7-3 score.  The split leaves the Seawolves with a record of 16-28 overall.

Trailing 3-1 heading into the seventh and final inning, things did not look good for the Seawolves in game one.  After two quick outs, Shyrle Hawes delivered a single.  After a double by Dani Lopez, Kayla Ledford came up with the biggest hit of her young Seawolves career, knocking in two with a single to tie things up at three.  After a single by Nicole Cordova and a walk to Simone Brandalise, Nikki Freiberg completed the miraculous comeback with a grand slam.

Brittany Williams was able to close the door in the bottom of the inning to preserve the win.  To earn the victory, Williams allowed five hits and five walks in seven innings while striking out four.

SSU had nine hits in the game, including two by Lopez, Cordova, and Brandalise.

After the incredible comeback in game one, the Seawolves didn't have enough left in the tank to complete the sweep.  Though they'd go up 3-0, NDNU was able to take the lead with two runs in the third and three more in the fourth.  A two-run sixth inning put the game out of reach.

Nicole Cordova hit a home run, her second of the year, to lead the Seawolves.  Lopez had a pair of hits.  Kayla Ledford was charged with the loss after allowing five runs in three and a third innings.

The Seawolves will play their final eight games of the season at home, starting with a doubleheader against first place Humboldt State on Friday.
