ROHNERT PARK, Calif- Number two in the country and, for now anyways, number two in the west region. That's where the Seawolves find themselves after the first NCAA West Region rankings of the season were announced on Wednesday. Sonoma State (35-5) will face the region's top ranked team, UC San Diego (34-9), in La Jolla this weekend.
The NCAA regional committee uses a different set of criteria than the voters in the national poll. Despite the region's top record and a 31-5 mark against in-region opponents, the Seawolves strength of schedule has been hampered by the performance of several teams they played earlier in the year.
The top six teams in the final regional rankings will advance to the NCAA West Regional Tournament, to be held May 15th through 18th. Traditionally the number one team is given the right to host. However, there are several requirements of a host facility, including lights and a press box.
There are three weeks left in the regular season before the CCAA Tournament (May 8-10). The site for the CCAA Tournament should be announced in the near future.
