LA JOLLA, Calif-
Konrad Thieme hit his 11th homer of the season and
Kris Haycock drove in five on Saturday as Sonoma State answered UC San Diego's series opening win with a doubleheader sweep at Triton Field. The second-ranked Seawolves routed the eighth-ranked Tritons 13-2 in the opener before using a come-from-behind effort in a 9-6 game two victory. The win lifts Sonoma State's record to 37-6, 21-4 CCAA. The Tritons fall to 35-11, 19-8 CCAA.
The Seawolves now have a three game lead in the CCAA standings over UC San Diego.
Sonoma State jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning of game one. The Seawolves had five hits in the inning and batted around. UCSD would score their only runs of the game in the bottom of the frame. From there, SSU starter
Gary Moran was solid, striking out eight in six innings for his fifth win of the year.
Thieme and
Nick Nosti paced SSU's fifteen hit attack with three each. Haycock was 2-for-5 with three RBIs and his third homer of the season.
Matt Garnett allowed just two hits in three innings of relief to earn his second save of the season.
The Seawolves had to come from behind in the second game as the Tritons scored four runs in the bottom of the second. SSU wouldn't wait long, however, to jump ahead as they scored five runs- all with two outs- in the top of the third. The Seawolves got a two-run triple from Haycock and a two-run homer from Thieme, his third of the series, in the inning.
After UC San Diego knotted things at five in the bottom of the third, the Seawolves scored four more times in the fourth inning.
Dave Herman had an RBI single and
Kyle Jones drove in three with a bases loaded double.
Kevin Asselin went the distance for Sonoma State, striking out four, to earn his team-high seventh win of the year. Jones finished the game with four RBIs and three different Seawolves had two hits each.
