Softball Edged Twice By Toros On Friday

Shyrle Hawes belted two doubles for Sonoma State on Friday
ROHNERT PARK, Calif-  The Cal State Dominguez Hills Toros kept their postseason hopes alive on Friday with a doubleheader sweep of Sonoma State on the Seawolves' home diamond in Rohnert Park.  The Toros improve to 26-23, 15-15 CCAA while the Seawolves drop to 16-34, 3-25 CCAA.
Cal State Dominguez Hills pitchers Regina Farfan and Kristina Tanaka did a nice job of keeping the Seawolves' offense in check.  SSU managed just three hits in the first game and five in the second.

Game one was played at a blistering pace as the teams finished the first six innings in about 45 minutes.  The Toros took the lead in the top of the sixth when a Seawolf error prolonged the inning long enough for Jen Frazier to deliver an RBI single.  The lead was pushed to 3-0 in the seventh when Katie Jordan was walked with the bases loaded and the next batter, Kristin Tanaka, singled home a runner.

SSU made things interesting in the bottom of the seventh.  After two quick outs, Nicole Cordova and Dani Lopez worked walks to put two runners on base for Shyrle Hawes.  Hawes' lined a double to left center to score both and bring the Seawolves within one.  CSUDH pitcher, Regina Farfan, was able to get the next batter, Nikki Freiberg, to ground out and end the game.

14 of the 21 outs the Seawolves made in the game were on groundouts.  Hawes, Lopez, and Cordova had hits for SSU and Brittany Williams was the hard-luck loser as she allowed just five hits in seven innings.

In game two, the Seawolves took an early lead when Brittany Williams drove in a run in the bottom of the third.  The Toros would be quick to answer as Katie Garcia tripled, then scored on a Christine Bathauer single.

The score would remain tied at one until the eighth inning when Jessica Marlow hit a sac fly with the bases loaded to plate what would be the game-winning run.

Tanaka struck out six and walked none to earn her eighth victory of the season for CSUDH.  Brittany Williams again picked up the loss as she allowed one run in a three-inning relief stint.  Kayla Ledford went the first five the Seawolves, allowing four hits and four walks while striking out two.

Bathauer had two hits to lead the Toros.  SSU got one hit from five different players.

The Toros and Seawolves will meet again tomorrow in a doubleheader starting at noon.
