Softball Ends Season With Losses To Toros

Shyrle Hawes closed out her Sonoma State career on Saturday afternoon
ROHNERT PARK, Calif-  An injury marred season came to an end on Saturday at Seawolf Field as the Sonoma State softball team dropped a doubleheader to Cal State Dominguez Hills, 4-2 and 8-2.  The Seawolves end the season at 16-36, 3-27 CCAA.  The Toros (28-23, 17-15 CCAA) are still in the mix for the NCAA West Regional tournament.
Saturday's action got off to a rocky start for the Seawolves as the Toros pushed across three runs in the first inning off of SSU starter Brittany Williams.  Katie Garcia had the big blast, a two-run homer down the right field line.

Trailing 4-0 in the seventh, the Seawolves mounted a rally.  After back-to-back singles by Shyrle Hawes and Jesse Talaugon, Brittany Simao was issued a one-out walk.  One batter later, with the bases loaded and two outs, Williams helped herself out with a two-run single.  The next batter, Kayla Ledford singled as well, but Simao was thrown out by the left fielder trying to score to end the game.

Ledford had a nice game, finishing 3-for-4.  The Seawolves out hit the Toros 8-7 in the game.

As they did in game two yesterday, the Seawolves got out to an early 1-0 lead.  This time it was Brittany Williams catching the defense napping and scoring a few seconds after Simone Brandalise was tagged out on a play at the plate.

The lead would not, however, last long as the Toros plated four runners in the second.  Cal State Dominguez Hills put the game away in the sixth with four more runs to make it 8-1.  A Seawolf error and a couple of timely singles led to the rally.  SSU put up one run in the bottom of the sixth, but that was it.

Cal State Dominguez Hills had the edge in hits 7-6.  Jessica Marlow led the way with two for the Toros.  Nicole Cordova led the Seawolves with a pair of hits.

Cordova finished the season as the Seawolves' batting average leader at .309.  She shared team-high honors with Dani Lopez for most RBIs (16).  Lopez was the team's leader with four home runs and Hawes had a Seawolf-high 23 runs scored.  Brittany Williams paced the pitching staff with nine wins, 85 strikeouts, and 181.1 innings pitched.

Prior to the game, SSU's lone senior, Shyrle Hawes, was honored for her achievements in a Sonoma State uniform.
