Men's Basketball Knocks Off CSU San Bernardino

Olivia Larkin scored 13 points on Friday, all in the second half
ROHNERT PARK, Calif-  Sonoma State got 15 points and eight rebounds from Ben Washington and a double-double from Curtis Harrison to defeat Cal State San Bernardino 75-64 in thrilling CCAA hoops action at Seawolf Gym in Rohnert Park.  It was the Seawolves' first win over the Coyotes on their home floor since 1998, a span of nine games.  The victory boosts Sonoma's record to 7-7, 3-4 CCAA while the Coyotes (7-6, 5-2 CCAA) see their five-game winning streak end.

Not only was it Sonoma's first win in over a decade at home against the Coyotes, it was just their third win against CSUSB since joining the CCAA in 1998-99.  Coming into Saturday's action, the Seawolves were just  2-20 against the Coyotes as conference foes.

On Saturday night, Sonoma got out to a 9-2 lead in the first three minutes, thanks to some hot shooting on their part and some poor shooting by the Coyotes.  As quick as the lead came, it went, however, as CSUSB scored nine straight to take an 11-9 lead over the next two and a half minutes.

Trailing 26-25 with 6:40 remaining in the first half, Sonoma took the lead on a Steven Pratt three-pointer.  It would turn out to be the last lead change of the game.

Up 38-29 at the break, Sonoma State quickly built the lead to double digits in the second half, expanding it to 17 at 55-38 with just under fourteen minutes to go.

The Coyotes would chip away, making it a game with a 7-0 run over a two-minute span later in the half.  That made it 66-60 with 4:04 to go, but another Pratt three-pointer with just under three to go, gave SSU a nine-point cushion.  Gerred Link put the finishing touches on the win with 1:38 left when he hit a trey to make it 72-60.

Washington led the Seawolves in scoring with 15 points.  He also had eight rebounds and four assists in an excellent all-around effort.  Harrison had his first double-double of the season with 11 points and 10 rebounds.  James Sandoval (13) and Casey McRoberts (10) would also be in double figures.

The Seawolves won handily despite  turning the ball over twice as many times as the Coyotes (16-to-8) and having 12 shots blocked.  Part of the difference was their overwhelming edge (51-to-31) in rebounding.

Brandon Brown had 20 points and seven rebounds for the Coyotes.  Devin Montgomery pitched in with 14 and DuBois Williams led CSUSB with eight rebounds.

The Seawolves will go for the weekend sweep on Saturday night when they host Cal Poly Pomona.
