ROHNERT PARK, Calif- Humboldt State used a big second half on Wednesday night to emerge with a 60-56 win over Sonoma State in CCAA women's hoops action at Seawolf Gym in Rohnert Park. The Seawolves led for the first three-quarters of the game before succumbing to a hot-shooting Lumberjack squad. Sonoma falls to 8-10, 4-7 CCAA while Humboldt goes to 13-5, 8-3 CCAA.
The Seawolves' defense came out on fire, limiting the CCAA's top offense to just two points in the first seven minutes of the game. With 8:14 to go in the half, the Seawolves' lead was ten at 19-9 and they led by eight at the break, 25-17.
Stilling clinging to a nine-point lead early in the second, the Seawolves' tide shifted with the 'Jacks going on a 8-0 run to pull within one. Humboldt stayed at Sonoma's heels for the next few minutes and finally took the lead on a three-pointer by Andrea Bobic with 8:43 left.
Bobic's three was the big shot in a 9-0 run that swung the score and the momentum. Though Sonoma State would keep it close, they would not be able to fight all the way back.
After being held to 28.6% shooting in the first half, the Lumberjacks shot 57.1% in the second. Humboldt was at 44.9% for the game, compared to 36.8% for Sonoma.
Stephanie Barnes led the Seawolves with a career-high 15 points. She was a near-perfect 7-for-8 from the field and she also grabbed five rebounds.
Lauren Redfield had seven points and six rebounds and
Marie Sweet poured in 11 points.
Bobic finished with a game-high 19 points to lead the Lumberjacks. Brittney Taylor added 14 points and seven rebounds and Katie Franci posted ten and seven.
Next up for the Seawolves will be No. 17 UC San Diego on Friday night.
