ROHNERT PARK, Calif- Jordan Lawley's half court prayer was answered at the buzzer on Friday night as UC San Diego emerged with a surreal 60-57 win over Sonoma State in CCAA action at Seawolf Gym. It was the fifth straight loss for the Seawolves as they fall to 7-12, 3-9 CCAA. The Tritons improve to 11-6, 8-3 CCAA.
The Seawolves had come back from a five-point deficit with under two minutes left to take the lead on a miraculous three-pointer and subsequent foul shot by
Casey McRoberts with seventeen seconds left. On the ensuing possession, UCSD's Kelvin Kim was fouled, though the senior made only one of two shots to make it a tie game with ten seconds left.
Perhaps unaware of the time left on the clock, McRoberts heaved a shot from near half court that missed and went out of bounds with five seconds remaining. The Tritons, with one last shot before the game went to overtime, got the ball in the hands of their leading scorer, who despite being just 1-of-10 from the field in the game, swished a half court runner at the buzzer.
The Tritons had taken control of the game late in the first half and early in the second, building up a 15-point lead at 45-30 with ten minutes left. Slowly, but surely, the Seawolves chipped away, due in large part to the long range shooting of McRoberts,
Steven Pratt, and
Gerred Link, who all came up with big three-pointers.
McRoberts finished his night with a game-high 17 points. He was 6-of-13 from the field and 4-of-10 from long distance.
Keith Garner had ten points and five steals as well.
Shane Poppen starred on both ends of the court for the Tritons, tallying 15 points and 14 rebounds. Kim also pitched in with 14 points.
The Seawolves will look to snap their streak next weekend when they travel to San Francisco State and Cal State Monterey Bay.
