Volleyball Falls To Cal State L.A. In Three Sets

Ali Walker led the Seawolves with 10 kills on Friday night.
LOS ANGELES- Senior outside hitter Ali Walker had a team-high 10 kills but Sonoma State hit at a season-low .113 percentage as the Seawolves fell victim to a three-set sweep for the first time this season, coming at the expense of Cal State L.A. in women's volleyball action Friday night in Los Angeles.

The loss puts the Seawolves, ranked third in this week's NCAA Division II West Region poll and 17th in the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) poll, at 15-5 overall and 7-5 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association. Cal State L.A., who are among teams receiving votes in the AVCA poll, fifth in the region and winners in nine of its last 10 matches, improved to 10-3 in conference play and 14-6 overall.

The Seawolves kept the first set close after a kill by sophomore Keala Peterson moved the score to 11-9 in favor of the Golden Eagles but Cal State L.A. went on a torrid 9-3 run to put the set out of reach, helping the hosts to a 25-19 victory in set one.

Sonoma State started out slow in the second set but thanks to a kill by Walker, a kill by senior Rikki Buckshnis and five errors by Cal State L.A., the Seawolves jumped to a 10-6 lead. However, a kill by L.A.'s Marquis Mora, followed by six straight Sonoma State attack errors put the Golden Eagles in the drivers seat with a 13-10 lead and never looking back as they stole the momentum and the eventual set win, 25-21.

In the third set, the two teams played through nine ties and two lead changes but Cal State L.A. pulled away after being tied up at 19 by scoring five unanswered points to force match point. Sonoma State then scored two points via a kill by Walker and a L.A. attack error but that is all the Seawolves could muster as Gabriela Bulawczyk hammered out the final kill for the 25-21 third set win and the match victory. Bulawczyk had game-highs of 12 kills and 17 digs, including a .478 hitting percentage for a team that hit .273 and had 49 kills.

The Seawolves, meanwhile, had their lowest kill output of the season (30) with Walker's 10  and Peterson's six. Junior Amanda Vanover (13) and sophomore Taylor Krenwinkel (11) combined for half of Sonoma State's 48 digs. Senior Lindsay Brown was held to a season-low 26 assists but led the team with five blocks (one solo).

For Cal State L.A., Kaylynne De La Rosa had 36 assists and five blocks. Mora added six blocks and Mary Laupepa alos had five rejections.

Sonoma State will return to the court on Saturday night at Cal State Dominguez Hills (1-19, 1-12 CCAA) who lost on Friday, 3-2, to Humboldt State.
