Volleyball Wins In Four Over Lumberjacks

Keala Peterson had a hot hand on Wednesday night at Arcata.
ARCATA, Calif- After dropping the first set to Humboldt State, the Seawolves bounced back to dominate the next three, riding Keala Peterson's game-high 24 kills, en route to a 3-1 victory over the Lumberjacks at Arcata. Ally Sather added 21 kills, helping Sonoma State, ranked at No. 20 in this week's American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) poll, improve to 17-5, 9-5 CCAA. The Lumberjacks stumbled to 7-15, 3-11 CCAA.

After a 15-12 Sonoma State lead in the first set, Humboldt State went off for five straight points to force the Seawolves to take a time out at 17-15. However, the Lumberjacks were able to hold off a determined Sonoma State squad and took the 1-0 match lead with a 25-23 victory in set one.

Then, in set two, the Seawolves wasted no time, jumping out to a large 10-2 lead but the Lumberjacks cut the lead to 12-8 before eight unforced errors by Humboldt State put the set out of reach, giving Sonoma State the fast track to the easy 25-15 win to even the match at one set apiece.

Peterson (nine kills) and Sather (six kills) then took the match into their own hands with a combined 15 kills in the third set alone, giving the Seawolves a huge 25-12 victory in set three. The fourth set continued to be the Peterson/Sather show, helping Sonoma State to the convincing 25-15 win and the 3-1 match victory. Sather had eight kills in the final set, including four straight hammers at one point.

The 45 kills between Peterson and Sather were the most by the duo in one match this season, accounting for all but 14 of Sonoma State's 59 kills. Rikki Buckshnis added nine kills and two errors in 20 attacks for a .350 hitting percentage. Ali Walker (three kills) and Sarah Illingworth (two kills) complemented the offensive efforts by Peterson, Sather and Buckshnis. Setter Christie Allen handed out a career-high 49 assists in the absence of the injured Lindsay Brown, the school's all-time assists leader. Taylor Krenwinkel had 24 digs and Peterson showed off her defensive capabilities as well, accumulating 21 digs.

Oceana Matsubu led the Lumberjacks with 11 kills.

Sonoma State will kick off its final homestand of the season on Friday when the Seawolves host Cal State Monterey Bay at The Wolves' Den. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m.
