Hot Hitting Seawolves Defeat Otters In Three Sets

Sather and Peterson supplied the offense for the Seawolves on Friday night.
ROHNERT PARK, Calif- Behind the 16 kills of sophomore Keala Peterson and freshman Ally Sather, Sonoma State cruised to a three-set sweep, despite resistance by Cal State Monterey Bay in the final frame on Friday night at The Wolves' Den. The Seawolves, ranked 20th in this week's American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) poll, earned their 10th win in conference play (10-5) and moved to 18-5 overall. The Otters fell to 8-15 (3-11 CCAA).

Sonoma State dominated the first two sets by only fighting through nine tie scores and three lead changes. With the hot hand of Peterson, the Seawolves hit at a blazing .397 clip with 30 kills in 58 attacks and just seven errors, including a red hot .438 hitting percentage in the second set. Peterson alone had 10 of Sonoma State's 30 kills through the first two frames, backed by Sather's eight kills.

In the third and final set, Cal State Monterey Bay kept things very close, forcing the Seawolves to 13 ties and three lead changes. The Otters had their best set of the match offensively, hitting at a .324 clip, but it was the Seawolves who kept their composure and fought through the end, winning the set 27-25 to clinch the sweep. Sather, who ended the night with the aforementioned 16 kills, had eight hammers in the final set and hit .433 for the match.

Kerri Sudarana and Alisha Thomas had 12 and 11 kills for the Otters, respectively, and Rheann Fall added eight to combine for 31 of CSUMB's 39 kills. Lauren Manzo controlled the Otter offense, passing out 24 assists and Katie Bos had 13 digs to lead all defenders.

For the Seawolves, senior Rikki Buckshnis had six kills to complement the offensive efforts of Peterson and Sather, helping Sonoma State to hit .356 -- the highest match total this season since the team hit .380 and .409 against Seattle Pacific (Sept. 3) and Evergreen State (Sept. 4) at the Central Washington Invitational. Senior Lindsay Brown returned from injury to hand out 40 assists and sophomore Taylor Krenwinkel had 11 digs.

With the win, the Seawolves have notched at least 10 wins in conference play for the second consecutive year -- Sonoma State finished 15-5 last season.

Sonoma State will return to the hardwood Saturday to take on San Francisco State, who beat the Seawolves earlier this season to give SSU their first loss of the season. First serve is set for 7 p.m. at The Wolves' Den.
