Volleyball Avoids Upset-Minded Broncos, Wins In Five

The Seawolves celebrate after their come-from-behind victory.
ROHNERT PARK, Calif- Thanks to a combined 42 kills by sophomore Keala Peterson and freshman Ally Sather, Sonoma State rallied from a 2-1 match deficit to defeat Cal Poly Pomona in five sets on Senior Night at The Wolves' Den. The Seawolves, who earned their 20th win for the second consecutive season, improved to 20-6 on the season and 12-6 in the CCAA. The Broncos fell to 10-15 (7-11 CCAA).

Cal Poly Pomona jumped out to a 9-3 lead in the opening set before it forced Sonoma State to take its first timeout of the match. A kill by Sather ended CPP's seven point run but the Broncos responded with three straight points to go up 12-4. The Seawolves clawed back into the set and came within one point at 14-13 but a 6-1 run by the Broncos diminished any hope for a first set comeback win for Sonoma State. However, SSU came within three (21-18) but three more points forced a Pomona set point and eventually the opening set win 25-20. The Seawolves were held at just .089 hitting thanks to four-and-a-half total blocks by the Broncos and 12 digs by libero Audrey Driscoll.

Sonoma State then took control of set two early and took the 7-2 lead forcing a Cal Poly Pomona timeout. The Broncos kept things close throughout the second frame, including a 22-21 score in favor of Sonoma State but three straight kills by Sather evened the match at one set apiece.

After the intermission, both teams came out with passion but it was Cal Poly Pomona that survived seven ties and as many lead changes to win the third set 25-17 thanks to six kills by Kristin McNeese for the Broncos who hit .286 in the set and held the Seawolves to just eight kills (.111 hitting percentage).

Down two sets to one, the Seawolves found its normal pace, getting six kills from Peterson but Pomona forced nine ties and seven lead changes until the set was tied at 14. Sonoma State went on a 11-5 run to finish the set, forcing the fifth and deciding set.

The Seawolves came out on fire, smashing 12 kills in 25 attacks and just one error (.440) with five coming from Sather to finish the come-from-behind victory over the upset-minded Broncos in an emotional fifth set.

Peterson and Sather had 21 kills each with Peterson notching another double-double, adding 13 digs. Four other Seawolves grabbed double-digit digs including senior Ali Walker who had a season-high 25 digs and seven kills of her own. Senior setter Lindsay Brown had 52 assists, 13 digs and four kills in her final collegiate home match as the two other seniors -- Rikki Buckshnis and Sarah Illingworth -- had six kills apiece.

For Cal Poly Pomona, McNeese paced the Broncos with 15 kills and Elizabeth Diaz added 12. Driscoll finished with 25 digs and Jasmine Davis handed out 45 assists. Taylr Kreutziger had a game-high eight assisted blocks for CCP who finished the night with 9.5 blocks.

Sonoma State will now hit the road for four matches to end the regular season, beginning with Friday night's match at Chico State (7 p.m.). Ranked third in last week's NCAA Division II West Region poll, the Seawolves will look hold their position as the top eight teams in the final regional rankings will participate in the postseason tournament.
