Buzzer Beater Dooms Seawolves In Season Opener

Mike Nelson led the Seawolves with 21 points and added five rebounds.
ROHNERT PARK, Calif- Two free throws by sophomore Ash Arnott gave Sonoma State a two point lead with 14 seconds remaining; however, Hawaii Pacific's Jeff Ingram nailed a three-pointer at the buzzer, giving the Sea Warriors the 77-76 victory on Friday night over the Seawolves in game two of the Ron Logsdon Basketball Classic in The Wolves' Den.

Down 76-74, Hawaii Pacific brought the ball up the floor and Mike Helton fired a shot with five seconds remaining but the ball bounced off a Sonoma State player on the rebound attempt, giving the Sea Warriors the ball out of bounds with just 3.0 seconds left in the game. That's when Ingram rolled off a screen, received the ball and faked a defender before nailing the three-pointer, sending the Sea Warriors into a frenzy.

Hawaii Pacific was just 1-for-15 from behind the three-point line before Ingram scored his only three points of the night.

Things looked up for Sonoma State from the start, as the Seawolves got off to a 9-0 lead early and led by as much as 10 points at 12-2 before Hawaii Pacific came storming back to within two points at 15-13 with 10 minutes to play in the first half. The Seawolves held off the Sea Warriors and never trailed in the opening frame, taking a 38-29 lead into the intermission.

The Sea Warriors then cut into the lead and a layup by Ray Murdock with 13:21 left in the second half gave Hawaii Pacific its first lead of the game at 51-50. The game went back and forth and no team led by more than five points the rest of the way. However, a made free-throw shot by freshman Chris Weber put the Seawolves up five with just 40 seconds left. Sonoma State had a chance to put the Sea Warriors away but SSU missed three of five crucial free throws in the final 26 ticks, leaving the door open for the game winner by Ingram.

Statistically speaking, the game was evenly matched. Both teams hit 38 percent from the floor and each team brought down 40 rebounds. Hawaii Pacific did out-point Sonoma State on second chance points (20-9) and in the paint (36-24), forcing the Seawolves to 30 turnovers.

Hawaii Pacific had four players in double-figures, including Helton's team-high 20 points and 10 rebounds.

Junior Mike Nelson led all scorers with 21 points on 9-of-14 shooting (3-of-4 from three-point range). Arnott hit four three-pointers while adding 16 points.

Sonoma State will return to the hardwood on Saturday night at 7:30 p.m. to take on Concordia University-Irvine in the final game of the Ninth Annual Ron Logsdon Basketball Classic. Concordia-Irvine, a NAIA Division I squad, dominated 21st-ranked Humboldt State in the opening game, 85-60.
