ROHNERT PARK, Calif- Sonoma State took a 28-27 lead into halftime but Humboldt State came out on fire in the second half, shooting 67.9 percent (19-of-28) to defeat the Seawolves, 76-47, in the California Collegiate Athletic Association opener for both teams on Tuesday night at The Wolves' Den. Sonoma State (2-1, 0-1 CCAA) suffered its first loss of the season and Humboldt State went to 2-1 (1-0 CCAA).
Neither team led by more than five points at any given time in the first half, as the Seawolves and Lumberjacks fought through five ties and nine lead changes. Sonoma State's
Oly Larkin and Humboldt State's Brittney Taylor each had eight points and six rebounds going into halftime, but the Lumberjacks' Taylor Kilgore had a game-high nine points at the intermission. The 'Jacks had a slightly better shooting percentage (35 percent to 26 percent) but the Seawolves held an advantage in rebounds (25-19), second chance points (9-1) and bench points (17-3).
However, Humboldt State came out firing on all cylinders. A 16-2 run early in the second half took the momentum out of the Seawolves and Sonoma State could never regain its rhythm. Humboldt State outscored Sonoma State on the fast break (22-0), including 18-0 in the second half. The Lumberjacks also controlled the paint all evening, outscoring the Seawolves 40-8 down low.
Sonoma State only managed 19 second half points, surrendering 49 to Humboldt State, which proved to be the ultimate difference.
Stephanie Barnes had a team-high 13 points; the only Sonoma State player in double-figures.
Christy Shreve grabbed nine rebounds.
Humboldt State shot 50.8 percent from the floor (30-of-59) and had three players in double-figures -- Taylor (22), Bree Halsey (16) and Kilgore (12). Taylor had an all-around night with seven boards, four steals, two assists and one block.
Sonoma State will take a short break before returning to the hardwood on Dec. 3 to take on Cal State Dominguez Hills at The Wolves' Den. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m.
