TURLOCK, Calif- Sonoma State sophomore's
Keala Peterson and
Taylor Krenwinkel set new all-time records while freshman
Ally Sather grabbed a career milestone in a three-set sweep of Cal State Stanislaus on Saturday night at Warrior Arena. The 18th-ranked Seawolves improved to 22-6 overall and 14-6 in the CCAA. The Warriors fell to 4-16 in league play and 10-18 on the season.
With 11 kills by Peterson on Saturday, she has recorded 350 for the season, setting a new all-time mark for most kills by a sophomore on Saturday, eclipsing the previous record of 346 set in 2001 by Christine Shiba. Krenwinkel collected her 1,000th dig on Saturday and with 15 digs against Stanislaus -- and 485 digs this season -- she broke the sophomore digs record of 479 set by former Seawolf Taylor Manton in 2005.
Cal State Stanislaus gave Sonoma State quite the run in the opening set, forcing nine ties and two lead changes. After a kill by Andrea Fett, the Warriors led 20-19. Each team traded sideouts before Lianne Vicchio tied the score up at 21 before Sonoma State reeled off four straight points, including two kills by Peterson to take the first set 25-21. Sather pounded out six kills for the Seawolves to lead all scorers in the first set.
In the second and third frames, the Seawolves used several big runs to control the match and put it out of the Warriors' reach, giving Sonoma State its third straight win.
Sather had a huge game, hammering in a game-high 16 kills in 34 attacks with just one error for a .441 hitting percentage. Peterson notched another double-double with her aforementioned 11 kills and 14 digs. Four other Sonoma players added double-digit digs, inlcuding Krenwinkel's team-leading 15. Senior
Lindsay Brown handed out 36 assists in the victory.
Cal State Stanislaus was led by Vicchio's 10 kills and Amanda Pielstick's 15 digs. Jessica Lehner passed out 27 assists.
Sonoma State will wrap up its regular season next weekend with a pair of matches at second-ranked UC San Diego on Friday and Cal State East Bay on Saturday. The Seawolves, ranked third in last week's regional poll, will then await word on their postseason fate as the top eight teams will qualify for the NCAA Division II Championship tournament.
NOTE: Freshman
Ally Sather went over the 400 kills plateau with 409 this season -- the fourth time in school history that a player has gone over 400 kills in a season. She broke the school record for most kills by a freshman earlier in the season.
