Chad Chambers had a career-high 22 points, recording his first double-double this season with a game-high 11 rebounds as Sonoma State scored 14 unanswered points to start the second half to help the Seawolves beat archrival Humboldt State, 65-50, on Saturday night at Lumberjack Arena in Arcata.
Sonoma State defeated Humboldt State for the first time in Arcata in 10 years -- the Seawolves last beat the Lumberjacks in Arcata on Nov. 28, 1999 in a 69-60 decision. Sonoma State won its second game this season, improving to 2-5 overall and 2-1 in California Collegiate Athletic Association play. Humboldt State, who began the 2009-10 season ranked in the national poll, fell to 3-3 overall and 2-1 in the CCAA.

Kyle Shandera got the Seawolves on the board with a layup in the paint for the 9-2 score. The Lumberjacks then jumped out to a 16-4 lead; however, the Seawolves went on a 24-14 run to end the half, going into the intermission down just two points at 30-28. Both teams shot nearly identical from the field (39.3 percent to 39.1 percent in favor of HSU).
Sonoma State came out on fire in the second half and scored 12 straight points to put the Seawolves in charge at 42-30 with just under 16 minutes remaining in the game. Humboldt State, who gained the respect of the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) in the pre-season poll but has since fallen out of the top 25, fought all the way back to a 48-44 deficit. Ash Arnott drained a three-pointer with 2:21 remaining in the game to put the Seawolves up by 11 points at 57-46 to put the game out of reach. Six free-throws by sophomore
Steven Pratt and two by Chambers down the stretch gave Sonoma State the eventual 15-point victory.
The Seawolves went 13-for-23 from the floor (56.5 percent) in the final period of play while holding the hosts to just 20.8 percent on 5-of-24 shooting. Sonoma State crashed the boards all evening, outrebounding Humboldt State 41-25, including 30-13 on the defensive end.

Mike Nelson (10).
Humboldt State averaged four players in double-figures entering Saturday night's matchup but only Brian Morris scored above that mark with a team-high 13 points. Zac Tiedeman added nine for the Lumberjacks.
Sonoma State will step out of CCAA competition to travel to Belmont on Tuesday in a matchup with the Argonauts of Notre Dame de Namur at 7:30 p.m. The Seawolves will then return home on Dec. 22 in a rematch with Humboldt State at 7 p.m. at The Wolves' Den.
