Pratt Sinks Free Throws To Edge Toros, 76-75

Steven Pratt returned to the floor in a big way on Thursday.
ROHNERT PARK, Calif-  Of Steven Pratt's career-high 23 points on Thursday night, none were bigger than a pair of free throws with 2.8 seconds left that gave Sonoma State a 76-75 lead and eventual win in the Seawolves' CCAA opener against Cal State Dominguez Hills at The Wolves' Den in Rohnert Park.  The Seawolves pick up their first victory of the season, improving to 1-4, 1-0 CCAA.  The Toros fall to 1-4, 1-0 CCAA.

Pratt, in his first game back after being injured midway through the Seawolves' season-opener, went a perfect 5-for-5 from the field and 12-of-14 from the free throw line to carry his squad to victory.

The Seawolves got out to a blistering start on Thursday, knocking down three three-pointers in the first three minutes and building up an early 11-3 lead.  The margin would grow to as many as nine at 25-16 with 10:47 remaining, before the Toros went on a 12-2 run over the next six minutes to take their first lead of the game at 28-27.  The teams would go back and forth for the remainder of the half, with Sonoma clinging to a 39-38 lead at the break.

Sonoma State would lead throughout most of the second half as well, but a 7-1 run over a minute and a half starting at the seven-minute mark would again pull the Toros even.  Cal State Dominguez Hills would eventually take the lead, expanding it to as many as four with 1:48 to go when Zareh Zargaryan scored on a layup.

After a Pratt layup and free throw brought the Seawolves within one, another Zargaryan bucket put the Toros up by three with 1:06 left.  Patrick Scott would score with 45 seconds left to make it a one-point Sonoma State deficit, and on the ensuing possession, the Toros turned it over, giving the Seawolves a chance to go ahead with 22 seconds left.

However, trailing by one with nine seconds left, Pratt, the game's eventual hero, would turn it over, setting up an excellent opportunity for the Toros to ice the game.

After getting fouled, CSUDH's Jamel Ward stepped to the line to try to add to the lead, but both of his free throws missed and after a Chad Chambers rebound, the Seawolves were given one final opportunity to win the game.

With seconds ticking away, Pratt was given the ball and as he started to penetrate towards the basket, the sophomore from Pleasanton was fouled by Ward, sending him to the line.  An 80% free throw shooter as a freshman, Pratt coolly sank both free throws and a last gasp attempt by the Toros came up empty.

The Seawolves ended up shooting 52.3% for the game after firing at a 61.9% clip in the first half.  Joining Pratt in double figures was freshman Jason Walter, who had a career-high 15 points to go along with seven rebounds and three assists.

John Staats led the Toros with 21 points, 15 of them coming on his five three-pointers.  Stephen Faulkner and Ward had seven rebounds and Tim McLaurin went for five assists.

The Seawolves are back in action on Saturday night when they host Cal State L.A., a 77-60 loser to Humboldt State on Thursday.
