Kyle Shandera netted a career-high 16 points and freshman
Sterling Arterberry added 16 off the bench, but Cal State L.A. outhustled Sonoma State in transition play on Saturday as the Golden Eagles improved to 2-1 overall and 1-1 in California Collegiate Athletic Association play with the 77-72 victory over the Seawolves at The Wolves. Den. Sonoma State stumbled to 1-5 (1-1 CCAA).
Cal State L.A. went back and forth with Sonoma State throughout the first half but the Seawolves played from behind for much of the opening 15 minutes. The Golden Eagles never led by more than three points until a three-pointer by CSULA's Chris Fields gave L.A. a four point lead at 14-10 with 11:38 remaining in the first half. On the next trip down the floor, Chris Robinson added to the Golden Eagle lead with a jumper to put L.A. up 16-10.
Both teams traded buckets but Sonoma State fought back to take a one-point lead at 21-20 with five minutes remaining in the half on a three-pointer by freshman
Will Olsem. However, Cal State L.A. answered with back-to-back three balls to take a five-point advantage.
After shooting a blazing 41.4 percent from the floor in the first 20 minutes, Cal State L.A. took the 32-26 into halftime. Sonoma State hit 30 percent of its shots in the first half.
In the second half, Sonoma State got within two points on three occasions before an and-one opportunity for Arterberry gave the Seawolves a slim one-point lead at 39-38 with 17:02 remaining in the game. A three-pointer by Fields regained the lead for L.A. The Seawolves kept things interesting, though, coming to within two points on eight occasions over the next nine minutes but that's as close as they would get.
Shandera's career night was overshadowed by the play of CSULA's Fields, who scored a game-high 23 points in the victory. He was complemented by Mark Dorsey's 12 points and Nuno Furtado's 11. Shandera hit 7-of-10 from the floor and grabbed four rebounds. Arterberry also had a career night with his aforementioned 16 points.
Sonoma State handed out a season-high 19 assists, including six from freshman
Chris Weber and three from sophomore
Steven Pratt. The Seawolves finished 38.7 from the floor on 24-of-62 shooting.
Cal State L.A. made up for its dismal outing at the free throw line, in which the Golden Eagles shot just 11-of-24 from the stripe, with an astonishing 54.5 percent shooting (30-55). Dorsey came down with a game-high eight points.
The Seawolves will hit the road for a pair of games at Humboldt State (Dec. 12) and a non-conference game at Notre Dame de Namur (Dec. 15) before returning home on Dec. 22 to host Humboldt State at The Wolves' Den.
