Men's Basketball Shows No Love For Stanislaus

Duane Wright went for 12 points in Saturday night's victory
ROHNERT PARK, Calif-  Cal State Stanislaus gave Sonoma State the perfect Valentine's Day gift on Saturday night, calling a timeout when they had none left and allowing Steven Pratt to sink the game-tying and game-winning technical free throws in the final minute of a 62-61 Seawolves win.  The Seawolves extend their winning streak to four in a row and strengthen their positioning for a CCAA Tournament berth at 11-12, 7-9 CCAA.  The Warriors fall to 6-15, 2-14 CCAA.

The game was definitely a reversal from the first meeting when the Seawolves ran all over the Warriors for a 98-57 win.  In fact, the Seawolves had to play from behind on Friday to get the victory.

After the Seawolves jetted to a 9-4 lead in the first two and a half minutes, they embarked on a cold spell that saw them go without a field goal for nearly nine minutes.  In the process, the Warriors grabbed an eight-point lead.  The Warriors would stay in front for the rest of the half and pushed the lead to as many as 13 in the second half at 51-39 with 13:12 left.

The Seawolves were quick to chip away, going on a 16-5 run over the next six minutes to pull even with 7:05 to play.  Sonoma took its first lead of the half on a pair of free throws by Duane Wright with three minutes left that made it 60-59.

Both teams missed shots in the ensuing minute and a half before the Warriors regained the lead when Michael Dyson swished a pair of free throws with a minute and a half remaining.

The Seawolves would miss a three, then a free throw before regaining the ball on a Keith Garner steal.  Garner would go on to turn it over, but then in the scramble, the Warriors did the inexplicable, calling a timeout when they had already used their allotment.  Steven Pratt, an 88% foul shooter stepped to the line and hit both to put the Seawolves up 62-61 with 31 seconds left.  The Warriors had a last shot opportunity, but a jumper by Chris Hayes rimmed out.

Though the Seawolves would shoot miserably from the free throw line (.545), it would be free throws that secured the victory.  Sonoma State was 12-of-22 in the game from the charity stripe.

Duane Wright had a nice game, pouring in 12 points and six rebounds to go along with two assists and two steals.  Ben Washington had ten points and Keith Garner was on top with seven rebounds.  Gerred Link guided the offense with five assists.

Christopher Teevan led the Warriors with 16 points on 7-of-11 shooting.  Benny Koochoie was also in double figures with 13 points and Michael Dyson grabbed game-high honors with 11 rebounds.

The Seawolves are back in action next Friday night when they head down south to face Cal Poly Pomona.
