ARCATA, Calif- Following a come-from-behind 6-5 loss in game one, Sonoma State rallied for a 6-2 victory over defending national champion Humboldt State in a CCAA twinbill on Friday afternoon in Arcata. The Seawolves earn a series split with the Lumberjacks, the nation's second-ranked team. Sonoma goes to 5-8, 3-5 CCAA while the 'Jacks go to 7-2, 2-2 CCAA.
The Seawolves got on the board early in game one, jetting to a 3-0 lead after the inning was capped by an
Alexandra Barenchi RBI double. Humboldt got one back in the second, but the Seawolves were quick to pile on more, scoring runs on a double by
Brittany Martinez and another run scoring hit from Barenchi.
In the fourth, the 'Jacks scored twice, which was followed by a Felicia Vivieros solo homer in the fifth that brought the margin down to just one run. The HSU comeback was completed in the seventh when Marissa Slattery tied the game up with a sac fly, followed by a Francesca West walk-off double.
Unlike Thursday, when the Seawolves were inept at the plate in game two, the team came out firing on all cylinders, scoring two runs in the first, three in teh second, and another in the third to make it 5-0. The Seawolves would put the finshing touches on a 6-2 victory in the seventh inning when
Ashley Britton blasted her first collegiate home run.
Brittany Reynolds got the win with a complete game, six-hit effort.
Simone Brandalise had three hits in the game to lift her team-high batting average to .385.
After 13 consecutive road games to open the season, the Seawolves will now embark on a long homestand, commencing on Tuesday (weather permitting) against Notre Dame de Namur.
