ROHNERT PARK, Calif- The Sonoma State women's water polo used an 8-2 run in the second half to propel themselves to victory over Cal State East Bay, 10-7. The comeback win improves Sonoma's record to 2-5.
Sonoma State's chances of victory sure did not look bright after the Pioneers posted four goals in the second quarter to give them a 5-2 advantage at halftime. Cal State East Bay's Mary Rosa had a hat trick in the first half, and netted two of her goals in the second period. Rosa's twin sister Ana chipped in a goal in the second, as well as Jenna Casady.
The Seawolves then erupted in the third quarter for three goals in three minutes, the latter tying the game at five when
Lauren Smith slipped one past Pioneer goalie T.J. Blount with 4:28 remaining in the period.
Sarah Watt proceeded to take the game over for Sonoma, notching two of her season-high three goals, including a penalty shot score with 1:09 remaining to push the Seawolf lead to 7-6.
Watt tacked on one more goal in the fourth, along with
Samantha Mullins and
Brooke Smith. Mullins and Smith each chipped in two assists, and
Emily Pearce had a game-high three steals for the Seawolves. Goalie
Lysa Lombard grabbed a season-high 11 saves.
Leading the cause for Cal State East Bay was Mary Rosa who had a game-high four goals.
Sonoma State returns to action tomorrow at the Seawolf Splash for two games. First up for the Seawolves is a date with Cal Lutheran at 10:30 a.m., followed by a match with Cal State Monterey Bay at 3:00 p.m.
